I'm gonna ignore genres I can't stand in anything but single song doses ala Black Metal or bands that I have a loathing for ala Judas Priest or Crapswitch Engage.

Napalm Death - something grates here. I love Carcass and a lot of the other early Earache stuff. But Napalm Death is one I could never wrap my ears around.

Death[//b] - I love Atheist and Pestilence who are in someways similar. But I could never get into Death even though I heard them before Atheist and Pestilence. I just don't understand.

[b]Dismember
- occassionally they're brilliant (e.g. Death Metal). But in most ways they are as repetitive and boring as Cannibal Corpse or Deicide.

Deicide/Cannibal Corpse - they bore me. Plus I hate Blaspherereion" off self titled one as much as I hate Limp Bizkit.

Shadows Fall - I like Of One Blood but everything of there's kinda pisses me off. I suspect it's the vocalist and lack of aggression on later albums. Yet this is right up my alley - riffy, melodic etc.

Dissection.

As I sit here trying to get into Storm of the Light's Bane for like the 5th time I can't help but label it as mediocre melodeath. I just don't see why they have such a legendary status amongst the black metal elite when they aren't even black metal nor that impressive.

Are you sure you're not holding a copy of Reinkaos?

Old Dissection would be melodeath if melodeath was intense, evil and capable of writing such apocalyptic songs as Soulreaper and Unhallowed.

I'd say Dissection is a hybrid of different genres, they're definitely not pure melodeath, nor are they pure black metal. They have ingredients from both though.

It's strange how people are eager to tag Dissection as melodeath, yet I've never seen anyone mentioning Watain and melodeath in the same sentence. If Dissection was melodeath then so is Watain nowadays.

I have somewhat amended my opinion of Anthrax based solely on the new album and specifically the song "In the End" from it.

My point being, neither is melodeath. What I'm saying is that Sworn to the Dark is easily as melodic an album as anything Dissection wrote in the 90's, barring Where Dead Angel's Lie.

I'd say both Watain and Dissection have their influences firmly in more traditional heavy metal, which shines through in their music. Calling Dissection of old melodeath and mediocre at that, is just plain insulting. I'd say their sound has more in common with what Watain is doing nowadays than anything In Flames or Dark Tranquillity ever wrote.

FFS, if this is mediocre melodeath then melodeath is the best thing ever. I can't help but wonder how the good melodeath bands sound.

I agree with this statement.

Dissection has always been a black metal band with melodic death influences to me. They definitely have a black metal element and they definitely have a very melodic death influence to them but all in all they're a very unique band with their own sound.

Sums it up quite well for me. Basically an unholy mixture of a lot of the aspects that make metal great.

most black metal acutally

still don't know why I should like something, but whatever. That is the best I can do for now.

Let's put it that way: you like thrash. Is there a thrash band you don't like?

most new ones
Metallica save KEA and RTL
Testament (boring as fuck)
Demolition Hammer (I like certain songs, but can't do a full album)

I know there is more, but they are the only ones coming to mind now.

Dude, demolition hammer? Really? But, but, but....so heavy! So bangable! Stretching process, ripping flesh, vertebrae collapse!!!

Anyway, for me, it's gotta be Believer. I love thrash, tech-thrash and prog thrash, but Believer always stinks up my ears for some reason.

Also, throw in latter day Megadeth. All the recent albums everybody loved. Can't get into them.

And at a stetch...also Razor. Don't dislike them at all, but don't see what they bring to the table that other bands don't.

Well, alright I'll check it out. The only one I own is Violent Restitution. There's nothing wrong with it, I guess, but I never spin it.

And it's not like I dislike DemoHammer, I just get bored with them after a few songs. But when I like one of their songs, it's kick ass.
