Great album that I picked up over 5 years ago when I first got into metal and it'll always have a place in my heart. It's full of atmosphere and emotion. The production is just a little raw, which i think adds to the atmosphere. Anyways, if you're into progressive death or just progressive music in general pick this up. I'll never forget the day I picked it up and the night i first listened to it...only special albums have that affect.

Thanks for the great review by the way Jason, it brings back good memories. 8)

Nice rating. I would have given it a 100/100 but that's because it has long been in my top 3 all time. Stunning album.

Excellent album, one of my favorite Opeth ones.

Very nice story about the car darive and the music disscusion, very true too; there are always albums that create fights among friends, but there are those special pieces of art that are so good, that everyone joins to praise.

Yeah. This is one of my absolute favorits too. Close to 100. I´ve probably heard it way over 10 000 times by now and not many records I own get that much attention. I´ve never really gotten into the newer Opeth. They just don´t have the same feeling of sadness, emptiness, darkness and rage. I love the look of the black and white cover on my livingroom wall together with still lifes red. Vinyl = bonus paintings.

I think this was the best Opeth album.

These guys are the Pink Floyd of Progressive Death Metal. My favorites are Blackwater Park and Deliverance, though the early stuff is very good too. :)

This album is my least favorite Opeth disc. But an Opeth least favorite is like trying to decide whether to drive the Porsche or the Audi to work each morning.

There was endless debates about this album on Ultimate metal (until they screwed it up by deleting the chat channel a year ago or so).

I prefer the later stuff and also Orchid to this release.

But hey it remains for many the best album ever released in the genre.

Fantastic band.

Opeth are a good example of evolution without being compromising and chumming up.
I consider Still Life the best Opeth album. It perfectly combines the strenghts of "old" and "new" Opeth.

I absolutely love this album, im listening to it as we speak and also at the same time my best mate who is also a metalhead is hearing it for the first time, so far he seems to be enjoying it :) i was lucky enough to find one of the limited edition copies of this album (i own #054 of 2000) and i cant stop playing it, its so damn good! currently listening to 'the night and the silent water'. by far my favourite opeth album and as opeth are certainly one of my fav bands this album is right up there with my top 3 or 4 fav albums of all time. the darkness, the atmosphere, the emotion, the musical skill and the songwriting genius of this album are second to none and i just love the vocals. the guitar sound is so unique that i can always recognise a new opeth song within seconds of hearing the guitars start...

pure masterpeice

Re: Night and the Silent Water.

A lot of people I know regad this as the best song on the album, but apparently th band themselves really hate it. IMO this is a shame because it means we will never see it performed live.

My favorite Opeth album is "My Arms, Your Hearse" closely followed by "Blackwater Park", and this is probably a close third.
