What do people think of bands like Khanate or Sunn 0)))) and bands in this style?

Personally I find their records very interesting, and in some ways thought provoking, but would find it impossible to just sit back and enjoy, on an emotional level. Is there anyone here that can?

I love Sunn O))) although you're a bit wrong there rio. They play Drone not sludge/noise. Jesu, Pelican and Isis would be sludge .

I love Sunn O))) because the music is very engulfing and trascendental. Not the type of music you enjoy because of the melodies or song structures etc etc.. but because of the kind of "ritualistic" experience it gives you.

Have been hearing very good things about Pelican. Have you got/heard March Into The Sea? Is it good?

Yes thats a good point about the post title, deathkvlt: I spent a while dithering over what to put, and I knew there was a certain word to use, ie "drone" but it slipped my mind. Although IMO "noise" is a good desciption.

I suppose the main obstacle for me here is my lack of appreciation for spiritual matters. I can understand how this music becomes a "ritualistic" thing, but for me that means nothing because I am not a ritualistic person. I am unable to reach a state of mind where I can gain a transcendental feeling from repetetive, mantra-like music.

You have to let Jesus into your heart, then all your problems will vanish.

I have the first 3 SUNNO))) albums, and frankly, I think that's about all that I'll ever need. I have been known to be wrong before though. :)

When I saw "noise" in the subject, for some reason I thought of Atomsmasher (or is it Phantomsmasher)? The Jim Plotkin/Dave Witte/Venetian Snares project. Very cool stuff, somewhat noisy, but not drone.

There are probably some free-jazz albums that you might find interesting. I like Peter Brotzmann's music a lot, though he does play in a variety of contexts.

Ah yes I own "Machine Gun".

Bizarrely, I find it works very well as background music.
