That is a very strange looking instrument. Like an 8 string bass, but 12 string guitar style?

Yes, the strings are doubled.
Doug Pinnick often used a Hamer 12 strings bass:

And I think Lemmy played an 8 strings (doubled) Rickenbaker at some time. It really helps with trios as it allows the bass to sound like a bass + a guitar.

These guys always come sooo close to reaching their full potential but in the end they always settle for being "pretty good". There are some really good songs on here though.

Just listened to that from start to finish while at the gym.. soo fucking good. Surely one of the best albums I have ever heard. Even after 8 years of hearing it it still surprises me every time.
