How fucking sad is it that people have to use a religion has a reason to promote charity? There are countless organizations that do things equally great if not more so without the need of self-interest in working towards god's favor and their own salvation.
Religion also does things like encourage individuals to not use medication despite having ample resources to take care of people. Hetfield describing the 11 year old kid who never had his arm set back into place after breaking it as a child, a mangled and warped wrist. Fucking atrocious.

In some ways you are correct.Terrorists do this very thing with their propaganda of jihad masking global politics of resistance and conquest. However, groups like Christian Science promote awful practices resulting in brainwashing with tragic results for no reason other than god's favor. Returning to the terrorism example, although the upper echelons may be spreading a distorted image, the actual perpetrators of the act probably think they are truly acting out God's will. Hence it is an ends to them despite being a means for their superiors in the hierarchy.
