So, so, so much bullshit being spoken in this thread, to the extent where I'm forced to break my silence and set you all right, as someone who actually, you know, lives in the fucking country in question. This is neither the social revolution of the poor nor some foreign violence of immigrants. This is chaos and mob rule. The one remarkable, positive outcome of all this is the natural coming together of communities, Jews and Muslims working together to protect synagogues from looters, Sikhs guarding their temples, hard-working men of every colour banding together to present a dignified, unified front to these fucking animals. Immigrants who came here decades ago and worked themselves hard as fuck since to raise an honest living have been ruined by stupid, violent mobs looking for a laugh. Shit, even London's rival football firms have made peace to defend their territory! I've never been so disgusted by what I've seen and heard, not least here in Manchester. The site of Peterloo, the location of the infamous 1819 massacre of innocent men and women gathered to plea for their basic rights, has been degraded by these scum who ransacked the shops that stand there today. Why? Not for some grand political gesture, that's for sure.
Don't let these bastards off the hook by bleating about economic conditions, Fridge's absolute bollocks about how David Cameron has robbed them of 'hopes, benefits, jobs, healthcare and academic chances' is mindboggling. Talk of the cuts is nonsense, especially considering that, say, the raise in university fees hasn't happened yet, and when it does you won't pay anything back until you earn over £21,000 a year, after the course is finished. The National Health Service is still free at the point of use, and will be even after the government has made its reforms, benefits are barely being touched, and the so-called 'draconian' cuts in government spending of the coalition will take the country back to the heyday of Labour spending - 2006 levels. ZOMG THATCHER WORKING CLASS RAGE! Do me a fucking favour. The private sector is spitting out jobs at three times the rate they're lost in the public sector, our debt is triple-A rated (unlike, you know, the world's most powerful nation, whoever that is) and the prospects would be great if our most important cities weren't being nightly routed by fucking filth. Not the poor, not the working class, not blacks, but opportunistic scum of all backgrounds, races and classes who saw an opportunity and leapt at it.
This all started because a drug dealer who may or may not have been armed was shot dead by police, but it's degraded into a riot of wanton violence like nothing that's been seen in this country for years. Even before we get to the disgraceful property damage, an elderly man has been beaten to his eventual death, three Asian lads have been deliberately run over, journalists and innocent teenagers have been attacked, people have been dragged from their cars and assaulted... Britain is burning, and every left-wing fuckwit whining about how society has to look at itself to find the cause of the riots is making excuses for unacceptable behaviour. Look at the family of Jean Charles de Menenzes, the innocent man who was murdered on the tube in 2005 in the midst of a terror alert - a thousand people marched peacefully up to Vauxhall Bridge then back again, and still haven't had justice. Mark Duggan's family have plead for peace, and been ignored by the mobs - this isn't about police brutality. This is about people thinking they can get away with breaking the law, seeing others getting free items with no or next to no penalty, and wanting the same for themselves. The rioters aren't the poor by your conventional means of poverty, they're on very generous government benefits at worst, learning where to strike next by checking on their blackberries and getting there in designer trainers, looking for a free tv or xbox. Others get away with it, why not go along and strike themselves, since the police are weak? And so off they go, and try their luck. And the police stood and watched them looting, and the political leadership of this country were caught on the hop. Nothing they could do, even as they rushed back from their holidays - the state has failed to protect peoples' lives and businesses and property as it should do at the very least.
Talk of shooting these people or running them over a la Dead1 is equally mad - the right-wing twat approach of shooting on sight is ridiculous. Steve's right, the state has to have limited powers. But when life and property are threatened, then I'd rather see the British army deployed under police command to aid and assist in nonlethal ways, than see news reports of innocent Libyan civilians dead because of their needless actions abroad. The real heroes of this are the likes of Tariq Jahan, the father of one of the murdered innocents in Birmingham last night, a noble, dignified human being who deserved far better than he got -

Trapt, sorry, mate, but your call to 'burn it the fuck down' has me fuming. You may mean well, but let's see how you like it. Let's torch your neighbourhood, let's riot and loot in your city centres, let's beat your elderly to the point of death, let's murder your young men, and then I'd like to see you explain it away because of feelings of 'hopelessness'. There is no excuse for this sort of behaviour, and never can be. It all seems to be calming down now, thankfully, but something significant has happened, and the likes of like me who value liberty over security have had their worlds rocked. What price liberty if you can't walk down a street without being assaulted? Britain has failed to protect its own, and twisting this for political reasons is despicable, the failings are across the political spectrum. Even if the police were unaccountably brutal, even if the poor were desperate and starving - neither of which they are - killing innocents and burning charity shops is unacceptable.
Noodles, that GIF is weeks old and most likely from the Canadian riots.
Z out, for the moment.
