Given 21st century society's tendency to rehash things, it is quite likely Nu-metal will make a comeback in the next few years.

Indeed media like Metal Hammer are already talking up the new Limp Bizkit album.

So is Nu-Metal ever going to make a comeback?

I highly doubt it. I think it was a uniquely '90s phenomenon that wouldn't (and shouldn't) be revived under any circumstances. I think the only reasons that Metal Hammer might be talking about the new Limp Bizkit are because Limp Bizkit is a relic from the Nu-Metal age-- a temporal fossil, if you will, and the idea that somehow they're still together is something to report, and that Metal Hammer pretty much has no credibility.

I don't see a Nu-Metal revival coming anytime soon.

I agree with him. Nu-Metal is the byproduct of 90's hip-hop and rock/metal fusion (thanks Aerosmith...), but both of those genre's themselve have evolved beyond that mold. Current rap/hip hop has expanded into something quite different from it's predecesor, slowly becoming more dance oriented than anything else. Metal on the other hand seems to be going in a more complex direction (bands like Mastadon, and the current crop of Prog minded bands), far away from the simplicity that is Nu-Metal. I just dont see those roads merging again any time soon. If anything, a new Limp Bizkit album is just causing a small stir for people that hear it and say OMG, I used to listen to that shit?

Now if we are talking about scenes making a comeback, beware Disco....

Eventually, it'll come back like all the (sub)genres do. Even the worst has its revival, I don't see why nu-metal would be an exception.

If it were true, where is the hair / glam revival? The "grunge" revival, the disco revival, etc.? Like all trends, they tend to fade away when something new comes along to replace it.

And I'm curious just which of "even the worst" has actually had a revival.

Non come to mind at the moment, but its a matter of time. Look at the movie industry. Once the well of ingenuity ran dry, what are they doing? Rehashing old shit. Remakes, reboots, revisions, etc.... It doesnt take a prophet to see a similar affect coming at the music industry. How far can you expand musical boundaries before you run out of room to grow? Everything old sounds new again to the next generation. They might not remake it word for word, but the elements are there to be picked from. Look at Blackveil Brides. Do they suck? Yeah, but are they popular with the youngsters? Sure. What are they playing? Alt Rock with hair metal imagery. Same goes for HIM, and any number of other groups out there.

So perhaps we wont say "Hey, Hair Metal's back", but it's influence on music will almost assuredly rise again because it is part of the cycle.

It'll probably make a comeback but not for a while because I think it's still in the "deeply, deeply uncool" phase right now.

It's interesting, because I actually think the biz tries it on sometimes. What about that Steel Panther bunch that were all over the metal news a while ago, that seemed like an attempt to kickstart something glammy. The Darkness have a new album coming soon, as well.

As for grunge's revival, Alice In Chains' new album heralded that to an extent. Soundgarden have a new album soon too, no? What's that if not a revival? I think the new Limp Bizkit album was heralded by certain mainstream rock journalists as a nu-metal revival - pushing the sort of yeah-they're-crap-but-hey-nostalgia attitude that made it a reasonable success.

Two bands releasing an album each doesn't equate to a revival.

As for disco, that clip is sonically reminiscent of a certain style of disco, but disco was a whole lot more than just the music.
And it was huge, not a mere smattering of artists delving into the past.

It depends what you mean by 'revival' - you'd deny that if those albums sold well, others would crop up in their place overnight? They're attempted revivals, at the least...

Only time will tell, I suppose.
