Didn't love it. But I do love Damnation.

The music was pretty good but the lyrics seemed clunky and forced

Honestly, the lyrics are what made it so difficult to enjoy. If he was growling 'God is dead' or whatever that many times I'd have been fine with it.

So then it wasn't the lyrics .. but his singing .. which I agree is annoying.

I like his voice. :(

But I like him singing on Damnation...

Stupid lyrics being sung and hence understandable are worse than lyrics I can't understand being growled.

Yep, and since 95% of lyrics are stupid this is why I love the incomprehensible ones.

I just listen to the 5% of bands with non-stupid lyrics 8-)

So do I. And his lyrics are usually better than this.

Well, I normally like his voice, so I guess what we have here is a combination of ill considered lyrics and poorly chosen melodic vehicle in which to deliver them. I think they would be slightly less annoying, but not vanishingly so, if he was singing "Bob is Red" or "I love Bread".

Actually, this has kind of grown on me. Bah humbug.

Just read an article about this album. Apparently, Akerfeldt started writing more standard Opeth material, but he said he didn't get the goosebumps from it anymore. He showed the material to Martin Mendez, who basically said "That's it?" apparently he wasn't happy with it at all.

So instead of giving us the same Opeth material, but apparently not as good, Mikael wiped the slate clean and started writing this stuff, and he says the whole band is a lot happier with it.

And I also heard they got Alex Acuña to do a guest appearance. Fuck yeah.

Interesting. Was there any mention of how long it took Mike to write the newer material?

BTW, The End Records and Amazon have the new album for pre-order, with The End having the deluxe collector's edition box set and the two other versions as well.

Not sure how long it took, but I believe I recall him saying it came to him pretty naturally.

I see. That seems reasonable. I love the new sound and sooner or later that was the logical direction Opeth was going to take, anyhow. So I guess Mendez not liking what Åkerfeldt wrote was a good thing for Opeth considering he wrote music that at least involved growls. Although I highly doubt Mike would write music just to make another album, nonetheless, they were all thinking of changing the bands' direction altogether.
