If you don't like death, black and thrash, then you're denying the essence of metal. It's easy to comprehend, doing a little research and analyzing the unicorns, dancing and sexy sweaters.

Nu, Math, Core-influenced and Grind are the only things I don't like about metal. I even like things like Manowar, Motley Crue and Dimmu Borgir from time to time.

actually, he is NOT denying the "essence of metal". He clearly stated he enjoyed Heavy Metal which is, with the shadow of the doubt, the essence of metal!

I tend to think of Tony Iommi's riffs and Dio's voice as the essence of metal haha

Well, I think the genre that defines metal is thrash. The essence of metal, good topic to debate. Most people are attracted to metal for its dark, evil, powerful music, not for its falsetto singing or twin guitar attacks.

Man, don't tell me Black Sabbath weren't dark!

@ Noodles
I almost concur, but I'd go with Iommi and Halford.

70'S Black Sabbath sounds like bluesy doom to me. The albums with Dio are not dark, but no less awesome. Heaven and Hell is a favorite of mine.

Those genres play too fast which ruins everything that's appealing about metal.(!!) Same deal with power metal.

Yet, countless examples in all those genres (particularly in black) don't play fast.

Lots of mid tempo DM in the 90's.

Metal might have a lot of subgenres but the only good ones are doom, sludge and heavy metal.

Since when did heavy metal become a subgenre?

:P so, what's the genre that rock n roll is dependant?

Things like Cascadian BM or Power Prog would be then like subsubsubsubsubgenres.... classifications, and evil thing, but necessary.

Rock'n'roll is the degenerate son of both country and blues.

Don't understand why Rock is not a genre in itself.

Edit: Wiki says Rock is indeed a genre.

Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s, primarily from a combination of the blues, country music, jazz, and gospel music.

Well, if one looks at the history of music and how it has evolved and progressed, everything is naturally inter-connected and very relative. Everything from the setar music of the 6 and 7th century, the medieval music of the middle ages, to the baroque and classical era, to the romantic period and contemporary classical music, to early pop/progressive aspect of bands like Pink Floyd and other bands that evolved from the blues and the jazz of the 50's and 60's, to the more sophisticated music of the late 60's to mid 70's, and everything that was more easy listening music in that period--to the more dark periods of Black Sabbath to the more extreme metal scene like possessed, Venom, and Celtic Frost... The music has naturally and beautifully evolved. So genres and sub-genres are merely labels given to avoid confusion and everything at the end has evolved from something smaller.
