Hm, this might grow on me, but I'm pretty cynical as of the moment. It won't take much for Shining to end up like Children Of Bodom! Yet it sounds like they're going in a 'Goatwhore-but-interesting' direction for the moment - it actually makes me want to listen to some proper Black Metal for the first time in ages. Incredible to think in retrospect that Fuel For Hatred actually showed how talented Satyricon are - not every band can go from writing interesting black metal to catchy mainstream metal, as this proves.

I think their new album is their worst one since they really went in this direction on V - Halmstad. It's good but nothing to write home about.

+1. I hate the singing on it. Where it was tolerable on VI, it is simply awful here.

Forgotten Tomb has a lot of these sorts of cringeworthy singing moments in their latest too. As idiotic as both bands' lyrical messages often were, they did come out several excellent albums...looks like the best days of both have passed.

I think the singing is good and I think this song in particular is good but the blast beat riffs/parts on this album aren't that good. Good enough though.

If you don't look at it as suicidal black metal, it's actually pretty good, like a natural progression of the previous album with the shreddy parts replaced with acoustic bits. First listen, so thoughts may change, but I like it a lot more than my post above suggests.
