:dio: Choosing between Marco and Mike seemed impossible, either would have been superb. You can't help but be pleased for him, and the band. A genuinely great replacement, in a world where it very rarely happens, I hope he does them proud. Can't wait for the next album.

can't wait to hear the new album with mike on it. I've seen mike at clinics a couple times and he's stellar.

In retrospect, it is very very difficult to tell how Mike can play as it was presented here. I think everyone involved really got the short end of the stick. All we saw was guys making mistakes and DT criticizing them for it afterwards. The DVD release needs to show at least a decent amount of their drumming. These guys came off looking like hacks on this thing, except Mike. His performance was very pedestrian on the video. The problem is we've seen all these drummers looking 1000x better than they did here because the footage used was so limited. It was all about how difficult DTs material is and not showcasing the talents of each guy they were considering. Any of them would have been perfect though.

I don't see how anyone got the "short end of the stick." They auditioned drummers, they jammed/rehearsed with them and they selected one. It's not like they could choose multiple drummers for the job, they had to select one and they chose one of the greatest drummers alive in Mike Mangini to fill Mike Portnoy's shoes.

I don't think they were out to make anyone look bad.

I disagree. Each drummer seemed to recieve their fair share of the spotlight given the length of the videos (basically just web videos, nothing more) and all seemed perfectly competent to say the least. Granted I do not have an ear to catch the mistakes you speak of, but at no point do I recall any of the members criticizing any of the drummers aside from perhaps a comment here or there. In fact, they seemed to go out of their way to praise them at every opportunity.

Regardless, it was great fun to get this perspective on the process, and I look foward to the new album just as I have with every DT album.

The fact that he played with James Labrie might have affected this decision a wee bit I think. Anyway, good for the guy. I wish him and the band all the best.
