I my top 30 albums ever, Rush and Dream Theater could probably score at least 10 appearances total.

I know Rush is my favorite and no one will be able to come close for years, so after that, Dream Theater is the logical best Metal band around when you compare them to their contemporaries. I for one love all the Dt alums and most of the side projects too. I'm not one of those people that dislikes stuff because the old stuff was so good. That goes for any band. I couldn't have figured out any possible direction than the one DT went in at the time, all things considered. They did remarkably well to be on a major label.

Wouldn't call them the best these days, up until Octavarium(My least favourite of theirs) they were pretty consistent but I haven't enjoyed that and the following albums as much.
Recently they are certainly the most frustrating with all the drama announcing their new drummer and the up coming documentary on the subject.

Labrie annoys me with the high stuff, but I confess to liking basically everything I've heard from this band up through Train of Thought. Not familiar with anything after that.

I respect DT and can occasionally enjoy some of their music but they produce their albums way too clean for me and I don't really like LaBrie's singing.

Besides, there isn't a "best band" in any genre since what constitutes as good is subjective.

I'd take Shadow Gallery and Fate's Warning over DT anyday. I don't like Labrie's singing especially when he tries to sound tough and angry. He seems too poppy at times too. The problem with DT's songs being long is that they feel long. Many times I have found myself listening to DT and suddenly my mind drifts off and I start wondering if I should be watching porn instead. I need to be in a certain mood to enjoy DT mainly cos of the musical wankery they indulge in. I do possess Six Degrees.., TOT, Octavarium and Systematic Chaos and listen to them occassionally. TOT is the one that gets the most spins.

That's being a bit semantic, how about we phrase it as "Do Dream Theater's fans have a strong argument that Dream Theater is the best progressive metal band band ever"

I don't know what Power Metal has to do with Prog. Metal.

maybe phrase it as non-distorted singing and riff oriented melodic metal bands?

Personally I find DT to be not metal. Prog rock maybe but they're rarely do anything that sounds like metal.

Personal opinion and all that.

Nowadays anything with guitars gets lumped in as metal.

Dream Theater are generally not heavy, they're not metallic sounding a lot of the time and they're not aggressive.

Nonsense. Anything with guitars != metal, Dream Theater have a shitload of Metallica influence easily audible in the riffs and are often metallic sounding. As for aggressive, depends who you compare them to. Iron Maiden, yes, Napalm Death, no.

Nowhere near as aggressive as early Iron Maiden (Iron Maiden's been drifting towards prog rock). Though DTsometimes do sound almost Nu-Metal with stuff like The Dark Eternal Night (though the solo sections have some more metallic bits).

And their most Metallic stuff is covering the whole of The Number of the Beast and Master of Puppets.

By the way I'm not saying they're bad. Stuff like Forsesaken is pretty cool (though stuff like Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is fucking irritating with its overbearing keyboards or pop ballads ala Wither - fuck ballads!).
