Have you ever been stupid enough to hurt yourself while listening to metal ?

It happened to me once, while listening to Accept - Shake your head. I did what I was told to - I shook my head. I had a stiff neck for 3 days, and the pain only went away several months after, maybe a year. And I have trouble headbanging now.

But that doesn't beat the achievement of a former friend, who stuck a knife in his hand while listening to Raining Blood (he's a nutcase).

You ?

Not even copious drunk headbanging can harm me, apparently.

I have had some bruises from hitting stuff with my knee or elbow while thrashing and usually a sore neck after concerts but nothing major.

One guy who used to post on here (maybe he still does?) developed tinnitus which scares the fuck out of me. Him talking about it makes it sound fucking awful.

I've never injured myself listening metal at home/not at a concert before...except for maybe at other metalheads' camp sites at Wacken where frantic headbanging sessions may cause one to smash one's head against a vehicle of some kind...but even then hasn't led to anything other than a few seconds of soreness (which mostly go ignored for the sake of continuing the epic headbanging  )

I've picked up a few bruises and cuts at concerts before, but nothing serious or long term. The closest thing was at a late night show at Wacken 2008 or 2009 and can't even remember who was playing anymore so it must not have been a terribly important band to me (either that or alcohol has stripped me of that memory). Anyways, I was partaking in some good friendly violent fun, when I stopped momentarily for headbanging purposes at the back end of the pit. Then suddenly some satan-forsaken crowdsurfer fell on my head (regular occurance, but annoying nonetheless). I remember dipping my left shoulder downward to roll the bastard off my back, but on his way off my back his boot flew up and kicked me square in the left ear. There wasn't much pain immediately after that, but for the next year or so whenever I lie down on that side of my head, was in very cold weather or a loud environment my left ear drum would start to throb somewhat uncomfortably.

It's long gone now though :dio:

 @ at the guy who stabbed himself in the hand listening to Raining Blood

Edit: and yeah about the sore neck after concerts like has been mentioned, but no pain for a year like you said Bruce lol

So far I've only had some bruises and a sore neck.
Recently I accidently scratched myself on the cheek with a fork because I was headbanging while eating. Nothing too serious though.

Yeah, well actually he's lost ability with his left hand, and he's in jail now (he raped a woman, violence was involved). He went completely insane (literally speaking) a few years ago.
But still, at stabbing yourself.

Priceless
You got lucky though, your eye wasn't too far...

I got my ass beat pretty bad for listening to metal over the holidays. I was moshing and I guess I elbowed some kid and some 250-300lb guy came up and just started decking me right after the band finished. Great story though.

Lost my talking voice for a week and lost my singing voice for two months after a (legal) amphetamine fueled 3 days in a row of singing. I took a smoke/piss/get some more tea break every few hours. My knees hurt like hell after sitting on the floor in the same position for so long too. The summer/fall of 09 kicked too much ass.

The same old power/prog. metal. After about 8 hours I had to start doing more limited range stuff and pop, after about 36 hours I lost my falsetto voicing and had to do nothing but modal singing. By the end it was so shot I was doing Pearl Jam songs. Basically the singing got lower over time until there was nowhere left in my voice that wasn't crippled.

Maybe you guys were talking about me?

Yeah tinnitus sucks major balls, the very fact that i'll be tortured every waking day and hour makes for one seriously unhappy me. I try not to think about it to much...to fucking depressing..I remember actually praying as hard as i could that it would go away, my prayers were not heard.

I have a painful handicap myself, so I know very well the bitterness it brings.
When did it begin ? Have you managed to learn living with it ?

*Turns the music down a bit*

How did it begin? It began about 2 and a half years ago when i attended a concert featuring Mastodon, Slayer and Amon Amarth (The Unholy Alliance Tour 2008) and when i got back home i noticed my ears were really sensitive and i had a ringing noise in my ears and i thought "It was pretty loud, so guess its normal to have ringing afterward...it'll probably go away. Woke up next morning and the ringing noise was still there, so i thought okay it will probably stop soon. Boy was i wrong...days and weeks went by..still no improvement. By three months time i sorta gave up hope alltogether. I did not handle this very well..i had bouts of deep depression and feelings of bereavment and i lost my appetite and slept very poorly (I still do). Nowadays i handle it much better, though i'm still very depressed i try to do things that cheer me up like gaming and listening to some good tunes. One side affect of this tinnitus thing (among many) that kind of scares me is the fact that i have become somewhat colder and indifferent to other peoples suffering. When you suffer each day, it does something to you, your mind, your mentality, your whole outlook on life. Truth is: I despise other peoples happiness, it makes me sick to watch other people happy knowing that i am very miserable. Maybe there is something wrong with me haha.

This. I have multiple sclerosis, which means my eyesight is fucked up (damaged optic nerve), I can't walk for 5 minutes without a walking stick, and I basically can't feel my feet anymore (granted, metal didn't cause my that obviously). I have other things I won't discuss here.

Anyway my point is, at first I couldn't stand other people's so-called problems. I often found myself genuinely wanting to toast them with a flamethrower. I still do sometimes. It happens.
And then one day I realized I'd be much better off focusing on what I can still do than bitching about what I cannot anymore. Not an easy task, obviously. But when I manage to do it, life is Oh-so-much-better.
[/mylife]

So, no, I don't think there is anything wrong with you at all  Your bitterness is entirely understandable. I'm sure you'll find your ways to fight it :dio:

Let me be the first to say:

If your ears are ringing, that does not mean damage has occurred. That means your ears are in a crippled state and are vulnerable to injury.

In other words, do not subject your ears to loud sounds if they are ringing. Take a day off.

Musicians get Tinnitus because they are subjected to very loud pressure 6/7 days a week and don't let their ears rest and heal.
