I'm trying to find the most melancholic music I can find please give me a list. It can span any genre.

I am also looking to find albums similar to dimmu borgir- stormblast, never found anything quite like this album.

Shining - Halmstad. Kicks ass and is depressing.
Celtic Frost - Monotheist. Dying God is such a sick track.
Reverend Bizarre has some tracks that plod along in the depression but some of the riffs lighten the air.
Weakling is melancholic in a USBM kinda way.
Funeral Mist - Marantha is pretty dire.
Dragged into Sunlight. A drone-y, doom-y Anaal Nathrakh.
Jesu is depressing in a way that is almost hopeful.
Thou is crushing.

I feel like a lot of hardcore and grindcore bands can be pretty grim. Pig Destroyer, Gaza, a few others.

Hmm Insomnium comes to mind. Check out Above the Weeping World, I think that is their best. Really great melodeath with a big melancholic atmosphere.

Not sure if that's what you want. This is also pretty great:

Track from Vali--Forlatt. Melancholy makes me think of chill, dark music.

Don't you always complain about depressive black metal? But yeah that album is fucking awesome. The best album they've done too.

Yeah that album has some of the best bm riffs ever I'd say. The last two minutes of Bevilsken (sp?) are fucking killer.

Wow, I'm listening to Shining- Klagospsalmer right now and it's fucking excellent. Shining is my new fav band haha. I don't know if I would call this black metal though, but it sure does kick ass.

Weakling is depressing as your sobbing waiting for the album to end. It's not very often you hear a band that sounds like a complete downer, least of all black metal whose eponymous sub-genre contains many horrible bands. The most disheartening sounding bands I've heard thus far are Eyehategod's Dopesick and the entire discography of Skepticism

douche. Lifelover is the weaker version of Shining in my book.
