Yeah I would in no way describe Dimmu Borgir as "brutal". They're a great band to me but just because they make good music, not because it's real evil and brutal sounding.

I remember when I was very young, the album "Don't Break the Oath" by Mercyful Fate scared the shit out of me. Pure evil from the cover, to the lyrics and especially the production. "A Dangerous Meeting" was and still is evil as all hell to these ears.

Most brutal.....way too many but I will agree with anything from early Cryptopsy and the Origin albums...and probably anything from the band Portal (aus).

I'm going to be picky about adjectives and say Portal isn't brutal. Cryptopsy is. Portal is alienating, frightening, or dissonant but not the standard definition of brutality.

Anaal Nathrakh is the definition of brutal. Tracks like Pandemonic Hyperblast or Submission is for the Weak stand out in terms of pure brutality. Their newer stuff is brutal but lacks the bluntness due to the melodic choruses.

Hate Eternal's Nailed to Obscurity is fucking brutal.

Evil makes me think of Deathspell Omega. And maybe Portal. Second Prayer, Carnal Malefactor, Jvbilate Deo, etc.

Grind like Defeatist or even screamo like Orchid or pageninetynine come off as brutal to me. Maybe just intense and not brutal.

At the risk of inviting much scorn and derision, I submit Dark Funeral - Secrets Of The Black Arts (pretty much entire album).

They may have a sub-par discopgraphy as a whole, but that one album always had a certain streak of malevolence that stood out to me.

Also, for evil riffage, Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness has it's fair share. Nobody has mentioned it yet, so...

Not too much into death metal (which is where the "brutal" aspect is likely to be found) so not much to add to that.

Wormphlegm- In an Excruciating Way...

Catacombs - In the Depths of R'lyeh, especially Fallen Into Shadow.

also come to mind.

,

Agreed with both. Also could add Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. Their discography is shit but that album oozed with evil.

Y'know, reading through this thread made me realise evil has never been something I look for in music. I'm totally indifferent towards it as a musical mood. I much prefer raw aggression.

I guess that explains my predilection towards thrash.

Celtic Frost - Procreation of the Wicked

Both evil and brutal!

Agreed with whoever said Brown Jenkins was evil and brutal. I've only heard 1 song and it was completely twisted and scary.

I don't know if I can take any band with the name "Brown Jenkins" seriously in the least.

Or cliched. Lovecraft is something that Anton LaVey would rave about in 1966 but would later pretty much dismiss and disown because too many people were aware of it. Too many people having an emotional attachment to something is not very useful to the sorcerer. Black Metal bands have yet to learn this lesson and is why they are largely perceived as a tongue in cheek joke or a really pathetic one, depending on their intentions and attitude.

I always thought "Witchfinder General" from Saxon was very evil sounding. I think there are two keys in that song, but it could be just one. The one that has that sense of urgency that the general is nigh. and the other spooky one where he whispers "confess" The guitar solo sounds like your own violent death happening.

That is great songwriting. I guess if you are listening for riffs, you won't get it.

No, wait...

"useful to the sorcerer"? "Anton LaVey"?

The fact that you cite a Saxon song as "evil and brutal" alone speaks for itself.

Ignoramus.

Personally, I like Lovecraft because it sends shivers up my spine, not because some fucking bald wizard recommended it.
