Look, I don't have a nationality. I was born in Oxford, raised in the Bronx, the German part of Switzerland, and the Italian part. International schools almost my entire life, and no real feelings of belonging to any nation or culture or whatsoever. I moved to Scotland for a reason, because I wanted to live in a culture that I admired and respected and wanted to be a part of. I fully intend to acquire citizenship and live my life involved with Scotland on every level- socially, politically, academically, whatever. Because I believe in national self-definition, I'm doing what any immigrant that wants to be part of the country that's hosting them should do. I'm integrating and assimilating. In your analogy, you'd only go to England if you actually did think the Clash were amazing, bangers and mash taste good, and that the English political system is admirable. I want to be Scottish, and because of the social system that exists in Scotland, I am welcome to assimilate.

Not at all. I would love to live in England or study there but if I went there. I would go there as an American. I would want to watch baseball games and be who I am now just transported to a beautiful country. I wouldn't feel some need or even desire to assimilate myself into the culture. I would want to participate and enjoy the culture but I would not act as if I could be English.More power to you, boss. Maybe you're just more cosmopolitan than I. I grew up on a farm in Ohio, maybe being blue collar American is all I got.

What gets me is how he's (claimed to have) adopted a local accent in so short a time. I'd have thought you have to live in a country for quite a few years before picking up a local accent - my beautiful purist southern English is slowly gaining a mild northern tint, but I've been living in Manchester for over fifteen years. I imagine it'd take even longer to change if I, say, moved to Texas.
