I listen to some rap. Only a couple i really like.
I mostly listened to alt-rap.

P.O.S. - Never Better . P.O.S. mixes rap with lots of drumming. Been on the Warped Tour several times. Political lyrics.

Necro - The Pre-Fix For Death, Death Rap. Has lots of lyrics about death, violence, the occult, Charles Manson, and religion. Members from Obituary, Shadows Fall, Anthrax, Hatebreed, Twelve Tribes and many more have contrubuted instruments or vocals. Claims to have created a new sub-genre, "Death Rap" You can almost consider this parody.

La Coka Nostra - A Brand You Can Trust. back to basic gangsta rap supergroup. Featuring Everlast under his alias "Mr. White", Ill Bill (Necro's brother), Slaine, DJ Lethal and Danny Boy (Ex-House of Pain)

Like quite a few people here, I happen to like some rap/hip-hop (the distinction between the two has always mystified me). I've been meaning to listen to more, but then again I've been meaning to listen to more of everything.

I'm a fan (to varying degrees) of Deltron 3030/Del the Funky Homosapien, the Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. I enjoy things like Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Bone Thugs in a similar manner as to how I enjoy things like Hammerfall. Which is to say, with a grain of salt. Plus Dr. Dre prompted me to finally check out Parliament and Funkadelic, so there's that.

I've heard more than these artists, clearly, but not quite enough for me to comfortably call myself a fan. Some things which I would like to hear more of: Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, Blackstar, MF Doom, The Roots (the idea of actually having a proper band/live-instrumentation appeals to me).

And of course I'll have to check out some of the people mentioned in this thread!

Anyone pick up the Nas/Damian Marley album Distant Relatives? It's fantastic.

Also, someone mentioned Jedi Mind Tricks. I'm a huge fan of them, though their last album was meh.

At times Public Enemy is more metal then metal is. Their Anthrax split was God awful, but It Takes a Nation of Millions is just badass. Wu-Tang is hard to dislike, and Aesop Rock is a lyrical genius.

I love Hip-Hop, probably my favorite genre although I have lost a lot of interest in it the last few years but this year a lot of solid releases have came out. For anybody who ever argues difference between "hip hop music" and "rap music" the answer is that there isn't any difference. Hip-Hop is the culture with the four aspects of dance, graffiti, emceeing, and DJing. Rap is the actual music. I love a lot of jazzy stuff like Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, Aceyalone, The Pharcyde, and things like that as well as old hardcore east coast like Wu-Tang Clan, Boot Camp Clik, and such. A few of my favorite albums are The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox, Violent By Design by Jedi Mind Tricks, Liquid Swords by GZA, Enter The 36 Chambers by Wu-Tang Clan, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... by Raekwon, Enta Da Stage by Black Moon, Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest, Mecca And The Soul Brother by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Illmatic by Nas and things like that. I do like some mainstream rap music, but I really can't stand things like Soulja Boy and all this autotune bull. It's absolutely terrible! I can't stand Drake or all this new Lil Wayne, etc.

During the cold years of alternative, with no internet to keep me informed, and no more HS in which to hear of new things I was lost and adrift with no music to sate me.

Until I was introduced to Wu-Tang and Enter the 36 chambers. Finally music with the energy and aggression that made me happy inside.

Anyway besides the first round of Wu records, as others have stated, Aesop, Atmosphere, MF Doom, Immortal Technique, Cage, El-P. I seem to have a decided slant towards the Def Jux label.

Had to go and pick up PE not too long ago, KRS-One has a lot of good stuff. I keep meaning to check out more of the Roots, only have one of theirs currently.

There is plenty of good rap with smart engaging lyrics and good beats. Then there is the shit on the radio. And as with pretty much all genres, if you let the shit that is on the radio define how you look at a genre, you will probably hate that style of music.

No love for Jedi Mind Tricks?

The Psycho Social album was and is a masterpiece of hip-hop music, dark twisted beats and equally dark and twisted lyrics.

Yeah, jedi mind tricks is awesome. If you like them check out army of the pharoahs.

There is actually alot of good rap out there if you look beyond MTV. Lowkey from britain is really good. Very political, kinda like Immortal Technique. Also Older Tech N9ne. Wiz Khalifa is also a good new up and comer in rap.

I'm one of those metalheads that loves GOOD rap music.

Dude, P.O.S is the shit. Never Better (2009) is my second favorite rap album ever, though I haven't listened to many rap albums through their entirety. At first P.O.S. was in a bunch of hardcore bands in the Twin cities area of Minnesota and despised rap, but after seeing that rap can is a viable genre of expressing yourself, he started rapping. Also, he refrences ISIS in the song Drumroll (We're All Thirsty).

I think all of it sucks.

The producers around now and since the late 90's are the worst in music history. They don't understand very simple things like rolling off the upper treble and that Bass frequencies travel slower than mids and highs. This is stuff they figured out in the Edison's time, so the only excuse is complete ignorance and refusal to allow professionals because as a producer they make more money recording their albums than they do as the songwriter and performer because of the nature of how they are paid. They want to be producers because they don't want to take a pay cut for an audience that couldn't care less about sound quality or if an album is even tolerable after a few months.

Please, do explain how I am mistaken and be as technical as possible.

You guys do understand most hip hop entertainers consider the music business to be a hustle and a scam for their own benefit.

I have never seen such disdain or contempt for the audience in any other genre, maybe the 1950's mafia run labels were as bad, but at least they got professionals to do the music instead of Vinny the Face releasing a shitty record of him talking over someone else's music because he gets a better cut that way.

Lets not forget damn near every first gen gangsta rapper from the early 90's was in some awful R&B group trying to be a New Jack Swing act hoping Babyface would sign them to a deal.

2pac. Not from the streets. From The Digital Underground.
