A well written and comprehensive review for a decent band, I have Nature of betrayal somewhere in my closet and from what I recall they're a solid young band. Though the bashing USBM nonsense while in the same breath calling hacks like Nachtmystium saviors for USBM is rather nauseating.

Agreed Steve. Nachtmystium is way overrated.

I saw this band back in 2004 or so at metal devestation down here in phoenix and they were pretty cool. Me and my brother bought their album and it was pretty good. I'll have to give this one a listen at some point.

Yeah, sorry Tyler, but when I read

Quote:
Besides a few notable exceptions (Wolves in the Throne Room, Nachtmystium), America has yet to produce any black metal groups of any real consequence.

my eyebrow shot through the roof of my skull. Krieg, Black Funeral, Leviathan, Cobalt, Absu, Krallice, Angelcorpse, Averse Sefira, Weakling, Lurker Of Chalice, Judas Iscariot, even bloody Xasthur are all of very real consequence.

I'm not sure about Krieg, but kudos to you for bringing up Averse Sefira..

I'm neutral about Black Funeral honestly, I have Ordog and Empire of blood and they both are solid pieces of blackened thrash stuff. But they really border on tedium, the same with Black Witchery..

American black metal doesn't touch any of the norwegian or swedish stuff. Case closed for me.

The Australian bm scene is where it's at, though for me Sweden will always be one of my favorites.

You would think that America, being such a "progressive" and "future oriented" nation, would have bred a significant counterculture, where the values expressed by traditional black metal would have been able to reach fruition.

Indeed. I, for one, certainly can't think of any American extreme right organisations or grassroots conservative movements that have arisen out of opposition to progressives in government!

And this is how a black metal review turns into a tea party debate.
