Don't agree at all. Neurosis, Cult of Luna, Mouth of the Architect, Minsk, Year of No Light, Capricorns, etc have tons of all three.

I still want to hear a convincing band play post-metal with clean vocals. Irreversible and Callisto come pretty close to nailing it but aren't quite there.

If you like Defeated Sanity, I highly recommend the bands of Unique Leader all of them combine brutal death with solid musicianship, you won't be disappointed looking at their roster.

Except they all sound like Deeds of Flesh (or at least they did last time I heard anything from the label - c.2005). :P

That they do, which means they sound like Suffocation, which means I'll enjoy them which means that if you have good taste you'll like them too.
:P

Which alas means I'm not into it. I respect Suffocation for their contribution to DM but never liked them per se.

I've only heard Neurosis and I always thought they were some sort of post-hardcore thing. They didn't sound Metal at all.

Neurosis from Souls at Zero onwards is much more akin to doom metal than any sort of hardcore I've heard.

Not sure. I heard it at a friend's house a long time ago (this guy loved wierd shit ala Acid Bath and modern Meshuggah - way to many ecstacy pills and dope I think).

Sound seemed rooted in hardcore and not very metal at all. It was wierd shit too and I didn't like it. This was in about 2002-03.

EDIT: Most of the Metal Archives reviews talk about hardcore/post hardcore sludge metal in the reviews.

You might have heard some of their first 2 albums, which were pretty much straight-up hardcore.

Ewww. Wankfests are wankfests no matter how you frame it. Minus intronaut, fuck post-metal.

I second this.

Most of this post metal stuff seems to forget what metal's about: riffs, aggression and energy (and more riffs)!

Neither does MOST power metal.

I like ISIS, BUT I really need to get my hands on more Neurosis.

Totally agree. I mainly focus on riffy stuff ala Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. Even then I prefer earlier stuffo ver later stuff (though Gamma Ray and Helloween both are still riffy and energetic).

as far as power metal goes, Dragonland and Theocracy are releasing albums this year who, as far as I'm concerned, are the best prog, avant-garde, modern, whatever you wanna call em, power metal bands out there today

The early stuff is Thrashy - songs like Violate, Last Laugh, Burning Times etc is pretty heavy for power metal. They turned to shit over the last few albums and any heaviness and intensity was replaced with pomp.

On their website in under the "band" they say they're releasing an album this year.

That Trophy Scars band is interesting.

I hate to hear the term "indie" being used as a genre.

It is a genre, broski. Describe Arcade Fire in other terms.

But yes, Trophy Scars is indeed badass. I really see their metal-influenced style, rather than metal influenced by other genres, as being where we will see many of the next great releases in heavy and extreme music.
