There are bands out there whose stellar discographies have overlooked albums, and for often good reason as their earlier albums may or may not reflect a period of youth and discovering themselves in terms of sound. What are some first albums or demos from earlier bands that reflect either a different sound or whose quality pales in comparison to what the band would become.

Totally agree on these two.

Anthrax had a relatively average debut with Fistful of Metal.

That's actually their best effort, everything after that was and is inferior.

They are both good, so is Spreading the Disease, but Fistful of Metal is the best.

No Pantera is better than any Pantera.

But can be pretty hilarious in a "laughing at," not "laughint with" kind of way. Youtube Deez Nutz for an example (obv. the band and not the Dre song, because that is actually kind of awesome, and not metal at all)!

Edit: But on topic, I agree with the inclusion of Thin Lizzy.

Deathcrush isn't that good but was the start of a legendary band.

Motorhead - their eponymous debut is completely overshadowed by their later work; even one album later (Overkill) the difference is striking.

Same with Saxon.

In The Sign Of Evil?
Thats probably my favorite Sodom album.
But I can see what you are getting at, the later material is a bit of a step up. I just like the energy and vigor of ITSOE.
