Well it is doom metal. *facepalm*

Keep in mind he speaks solely from the optics of a musician, and not all doom metal is played at the tempo of Catacombs. As for my contribution to the thread, I still have yet to fully appreciate the works of Satyricon, Mortuary Drape, and Samael. I am fairly selective to the black metal I listen too, and while Samael seems interesting in several respects Satyricon take a bit more time to appreciate.

Have you listened to The Shadowthrone?
It seems like an album you would probably like.

I agree on Mortuary Drape; never clicked.

70s Priest is some of the best metal/rock ever. Better than 80s, 90s, and today Priest. Painkillier included.

Truth.
Especially Painkiller.

Ah, this thread again.

This is solely the case if one states or lists the bands instead of expounding why they haven't fully listened to their discography, never fully understood their sound, or haven't gotten around to listening to them. I never said what Classic band you outright hated, I said which one you never understood or based on what you have heard are left with more of a "meh" than outright revulsion.

I agree. Threads like this can be done right, as long as the trolling is kept out.

Sorry, man. I just never got into them, somehow.

They always seemed to be overshadowed by their contemporaries, Metallica excluded.

There was always Coroner, or Mercyful Fate or something to listen to, you know.

Samael is pretty good but isn't a top tier black metal band, imo.

Same here. It's not that I don't like their earlier works, just that I like Painkiller and the albums after that more. An exception to that is Defenders Of The Faith which I would say is their next best after Painkiller. Another band that I was never able to get into is Queen. I've given them a few tries, but find Freddie Mercury's voice to be immensly annoying, and every band member has got an irritating face. I respect them for their huge influence and legendary status, but they just don't seem to do anything except annoy the hell out of me.

Ozzy Osbourne's shit for the most part.

Iron Maiden was always good but overrated.

I'm a Major key power metal guy, I think it's a bit obvious why I wouldn't care much for Doom.

Interesting story. I was showing my nephew how the chipmunks' voices got like that on the record with Crimson Glory's "lonely" and I changed the pitch to an octave lower after he heard it. It sounded incredible, why isn't anyone making some good classic metal but just dropped down an octave. It would sound doomy and heavy as fuck, without making me want to kill myself.

Go get audacity and drop the pitch down 12 semitones to your favorite song and see how cool it sounds. The vocals sound goofy, but the guitars sound insanely melodic.

I agree with that. Despite Randy, I hear 70's AOR that isn't going anywhere we haven't been on those first 3 records.

I get it though, the first time you encounter a band that has that prototypical sound you've been looking for in a band, you kind of fall in love with it.

So many bands have done so much better than Maiden with their own style and since I heard them first I prefer them instead. Sawy.

I don't understand why some people say 70's Priest is the best better than 80's Priest and vice versa. Your comparing apples to oranges considering that 70's Priest is a different era than 80's Priest. Defenders Of The Faith or Screaming For Vengeance are different albums than say Sin After Sin or Stained Class.

Seriously though I like both eras because the way JP progressed over the years from a simple prog rock band to the heavy metal juggernauts that they are now.

70s Priest is still better.

I don't see how someone can be a big fan of thrash and not care about Megadeth.

It is Metallica on amphetamines instead of alcohol and caffeine.

Tighter, faster, a bit paranoid, moody and angry but with bursts of exuberant jubilation. But the songwriting suffers from being a bit incoherent and erratic sometimes.

Oh I enjoy lots of thrash, as you well know. Second only to black on the metal ladder. Black being in a dead heat with traditional HM.
Something about Megadeth just seems a bit weak.
The first album was alright, but anything after that just didn't sound interesting. Too generic.
The riffs, though obviously competent don't grab me the same way, say, Sepultura's do.

Maybe that's why; I never ever did care for Metallica. Again, too generic, and there is just way too much thrash capable of grabbing you by the neck and rattling your brains with wave after wave of riffs to be bothered with Generica.

Listen to Beneath The Remains, Hell Awaits, Darkness Descends, Bonded By Blood or any number of dozens of thrash albums of that era and then listen to Kill 'em All, (hell, even RTL, MOP, or AJFA, to be fair)l... it sounds tame and stock in comparison.

In all fairness Kill Em All was the best thing they ever did, and if you don't like that one, there's really not too much to care about
