I was listening to the Radio One Rock Show (plug, plug) which isn't always that good but redeems itself occassionally (Biomechanical session next week). So there I was, when the DJ announced Avenged Sevenfold's new track, from their soon-coming album 'City Of Evil', called 'The Beast And The Harlot', very CoF. Yippee, I thought. More nu metalcore crap. But then the song started. And it was suprisingly good, a nice riff (OK, metalcorey, but not bad all the same), building up naturally to the vocals. Which were another suprise, because obviously the buffed-up boy band that is A7X ( ) had been listening to a lot of Ozzy recently. it was all there, the whine, everything. And I was beginning to relax into it, mentally thanking Emokid for mentioning them in the 'Decent Metalcore' thread. And then it happened. The Chorus.

The Chorus
A bit of backgorund, here. About three days before I became Metal, I purchased a CD. The title of this CD was 'The Young And The Hopeless'. It was by a 'band' known only as 'Good Charlotte'. Who Charlotte was, and why she was good, I have no idea. But I bought it, I took it home, I played it, and, God help me, I liked it. Then I played it again, decided it was actually quite shit, and binned it (no taking-it-back-and-pretending-it-was-scratched-shenanigans for me, since I got it from a supermarket (tesco's, curse them) and they would only give me another copy of it). Three days later, I purchased my first Iron Maiden CD, and promply became Metal.

Fastforward a year and a bit, to now. Listening to that chorus on this Revenged Seventimes track was like listening to the pop-punk emo bullshit that is the Charlotte of Goodness. The voices went all light, in harmony, and underneath it all was a guitar 'riff' that sounded like a Rhapsody (Rhapsody; sod = sodomise, the clue's in the title) keyboard from one of their horrible songs that Christopher Lee whored himself out to, the Old Bastard (come on, he was great in LOTR!!). Now, I have heard little power metal, but what I have heard (Maiden, Hammerfall, basically) tells me that the guitars do not sound like keyboards. There aren't enough swearwords in the English language to describe this fucking shit; if I knew enough French, I'd switch to it to describe this steaming pile of chien-merde (?).

Analysing it afterwards, I realised that that was the true evil of those beefy nancy boys. they bought you in with a good bit, then forced you into the gates of hell. And guys, it's only non Metallers who have to listen to Darkthrone in the Pit; for Metalheads it's pop all the way.

I am awaiting an explanation from the aforementioned member of the forums that put my ears through this torture. In the meantime, I'm off to listen to some Berzerker to help my poor mangled eardrums recover.

so you say you liked the song but except for the über-shitty chorus... okay... maybe the band changed a lot since their previous (and independantly released) albums... maybe our taste differ but I can't tell you since I don't know what this new A7X is going to be made off...

all I said was their 2 previous albums (Sounding the 7th Trumpet and particullary Waking the Fallen) were a nice mix of classic heavy metal and hardcore... I still think that way (even if the musicians are huuuuuge posers, I agree with whoever said that) but that new album might be a bit of a let-down, turning more commercial and shit since they signed to a major company... then, fine by me, let's call them sell-outs...

I'll still give this album a try though...

The chorus actually took up a large chunk of the song, so I didn't really like the song overall, despite the OK-bit at the start.
I have no idea what they sounded like on previous 2 albums, but if it's anything like this, I'll avoid it like the plague.
Listen at your own risk.

Have you ever listened to Avenged Sevenfold prior to this album? I admit their look is similar to that of a Good Charlotte, but they're far from what you describe. I dislike this band for the simple fact that they're trying to cash in on the screamo-verse-melodic-chorus format, which is not how they were prior to their last album, but the comments you made are innacurate.

ok.... 'The Beast And The Harlot' sucks... and that's terrible news :(

their previous albums were much better than this Sum41ish bad bad song.... the first was hardcore mixed with HM influences, the 2nd was power metal influenced hXc and both were good...

with this song it's cleary no longer the case... what we have here is a fucking punk pop band with a few metal guitars, a big disappointment... but i'll listen to the ful album anyway. maybe it's just a crappy single on a good album, maybe it's just another sell-out to the record industry...

I'll keep you informed !

PS : the 2nd song on the album, Burn it Down, is a bit better.... let's hope the 3rd will be even better, and the fourth and the fifth etc...

actually the worst song is the opener, the 2nd worst is the 2nd one on the album.... then... it's good, I listened to the album 3 times since yesterday and it's, imo, the best album this year so far when relating to heavy/power metal... but then, I'm no real metalhead... but those who enjoy both heavy metal and don't mind nasal vocals (think Vince Neil only a LOT better !) should try it, only starting from the 3rd song... that still makes the album over an hour length... :D

PS : and yes it has a little something punky, but then so did Maiden with Paul...

Heavy/power metal?? Man, you know, I'm not much of a fan of "genre"-placing a band, but it's unavoidable so let's at least get it somewhat correct.

to T.I.E. the sound of his testicles smacking against Gast1's buttocks is power-metal, so you must forgive him.
