I read all about it back when he was arrested and I can't remember what my opinion then was, so I'll just say that this is a very good argument in favour of the abolition of borders.

I like Polanski and all but he fucked a teenager. Correction: raped. He deserves the punishment he was sentenced to. If it's too harsh well I'm sure other individuals have been sentenced to the same cruel punishment he has and they went through with it. He is no better than them. Now if he really wanted to protest this, he would now become an advocate to improve the penal system and when corrected serve his time. However, he's just going to wipe the sweat off his brow and be pleased with himself for escaping that close call.

He settled, for chrissakes. We've been through this: he settled, the family of the victim was satisfied, but the judge, who had already been known to manipulate cases, was trying to illegally extend it, probably for media attention.

I tend to agree with the article, the guy did the time after all.

For those who still believe in the rule of law .. he remains a fugitive of justice in the State of California. Whether you agree or disagree with the charges, he left town before due process could run its course.

What would actually happen upon his return is up to speculation, but since the misconduct of the presiding judge is now known, I expect he would face a lenient sentence for the charge he plead guilty to. However, the charge would not be dropped, which is apparently his main contention.

In the end, 'tis far better to simply not have sex with minors.

I once had a professor in undergrad(class was Europe since 1848, mind you) that insisted we write a paper on Polanski's life for the express purpose of telling anyone off who claimed he was guilty.

I believe this was all vaguely connected to the holocaust

Forgot that he had served 90 days. Yet the law in California says up to one year in jail for statutory rape so I guess it fulfills but whatever. 90 days really just doesn't satisfy me for someone who drugged, raped and sodomized a teenage girl.

All I was trying to say was that he isn't above the law because he is a celebrity. I completely abhor the American prison system yet living in America, like he was, you have to accept to some degree the laws within it. He wasn't being oppressed to justify his translegal status.

No, but neither is he beneath it. There was a bit of a witch-hunt going on, and yeah, being a holocaust survivor has nothing to do with it.

What was the witch-hunt directed at? Him as a Hollywood figure, a pedophile or what? And what makes it seem like a witch-hunt to you? I just feel like his acts could've resulted in a laundry list of charges from sodomy to false imprisonment.

Him, screw all his whiny Hollywood friends making out like this was the biggest travesty of justice since Rubin Carter. He did do the time - why should he be tried again for a crime he's already been tried for?

Because he only served 90 days for committing an atrocious crime?

He won't be tried again .. he will be sentenced for the first time. He has already pleaded guilty. His "time" was for psychiatric evaluation and would be considered in sentencing. In all likelihood he would get probation like everyone thought he would get the first time .. before he left the country.

However, since Mr. Polanski apparently wants the charges dropped, he isn't returning anytime soon. Basically it all comes down to that. He could return, do some probation and then get on with the rest of his life if he really wanted to.

I'm glad he's free.
The 70s were a totally different time and the mother of the girl has a lot of responsabilities in what happened to her daughter.
Polanski has payed for his alleged crime anyway.

Her mother didn't force him to do all of this: "instructed her to get into a jacuzzi naked, refused to take her home when she begged to go, began kissing her even though she said no and asked him to stop; performed cunnilingus on her as she said no and asked him to stop; put his penis in her vagina as she said no and asked him to stop; asked if he could penetrate her anally, to which she replied, "No," then went ahead and did it anyway, until he had an orgasm." Parents bear some fault in what their children are around but they shouldn't be blamed for the acts of predators. Just because the 70s were different didn't mean that drugging and raping a child was ever cool. And honestly, 90 days and being unable to pick up your Oscar at the awards ceremony isn't an adequate punishment for all that he did. If that judge wanted to crucify him for all that he did, I see no reason why not. If this was any of our kids that this had happened to I hope that each one of you would want to see him flayed alive with tar smeared across his wounds Foucault style.
