Yes, that's what I thought. Arrogant and disrespectful prick you are.
I hate it when people think they have the truth, this leads to fanatism and bigotry.

But you had said your opinion in this thread several times before. We've seen all range of opinions, most of them very learned on the genre too. A yes, to a no, to a who cares? to something in between. Don't like someone's take? Just let it go.

Bite me... you have anything to say about the topic, Mr. 345 posts in less than a month?
Why is Dimmy black metal, enlighten us, please.

BTW, you're not fooling anyone, you know.

I, for one, will not pretend to know what Black Metal is but it seems to me that, though at the commercial end of the spectrum, it is generally accepted that Dimmu Borgir are a black metal band.
You can very well say they're not you're kind of black metal and you consider them to be sell-outs or something, that's alright. The fact remains that they belong to the black metal scene and you denying it won't change that fact a bit.

And why do you say I'm not fooling anyone?

I am just not sure how to measure this. But I think of the posters most experienced with the genre, the majority opinion was that Dimmu weren't.

I simply hate it when people think they have the absolute truth.
This kind of attitude lead to religious wars, apartheid, etc. So, okay, it's just a debate on weither said band belongs to a scene or not, it's not that bad. Still, what I read from that Banshee dude makes me think is not a the kind of person to respect other people's opinion and taste. I hate this kind of attitude.
And now, you're right, I'll leave it to that, I don't have time to waste on endless arguments with people who will never accept their truth is not universal.

It would serve you well to at least have an inkling of what you are talking about before throwing you shovel in, don't you think?

I don't claim to know "The Absolute Truth", but I do know what black metal is and what it isn't... Jebus, where do these fucking lunatics come from... same old shit, oui?
Anyway, you've wasted enough of my time, now... fuck off.

See, that's the difference between you and me. I do not pretend, I read, I compile the facts and come to a conclusion which might be wrong or right but is based on general consensus. You, on the other end, have the truth. Good for you.

It is... and bad for you, because when one speaks out of turn about things they have no knowledge of, they invariably come out looking like an ass.

General consensus? Maybe amongst black metal dilletantes, but that's about it.
So you base your knowledge (sorry, lack of knowledge in this case; I mean opinion) on what other people say?
Interesting.

How is he "close-minded" you attempt to equate an illusory term such as truth along with general concordance. You have not attempted to even remotely tried to define what true black metal is, and your supposed to stifle of criticism by citing credulity from mainstream fans of the genre?

True black metal? Now I see where you're coming from. If there are true and untrue black metal bands then Dimmu certainly belongs to the untrue category, one that has mainstream aesthetics, that relies on catchy riffs and pompous synths, there's no arguing about that. Yet, as untrue as they are, they're still black metal. Let's say they're to black metal what Avenged Sevenfold are to heavy/power metal: a mainstream-oriented version of the genre, something to attract kids who, then, can go to more "serious shit". Like it or not, there's always been bands serving as kind of a gateway to more extreme ones.

The opposite of true is false.
There is no such thing as "untrue".
Only true and false.
False = not.

Is this going too fucking fast for you?

Fuck that guy, he claims he doesn't know what black metal, is but somehow he knows Dimmy is black metal...
does not compute.

Nevermind. Manowar often uses the "death to false metal" line. By that they ascertain that, even if it's false - or untrue, it's still metal. Same goes with Dimmu Borgir, they may very well be false black metal, they're still black metal.

Funny though that you focused on one word and left the rest of my post untouched. Maybe it was too "unfalse" for you.

Surely a genre descriptor has to have some objective measurability. It's not a value judgement, it's a technical designation.

cry of the banshee wrote:

Limbonic Art creates Faustian soundscapes of melancholic desolation, at times Wagnerian in it's grandiosity, at times phantasmagoric, always as cold as the voids between the stars. This is why they are, or were, black metal.
Tales of sorcery told through music is how I would describe the first few Limbonic Art albums.

My problem with this is that you can't make an objective assessment of where a term can or can't apply by using such subjective, nebulous, even, language.

Obviously I would agree that BM ought to be cold. But if something has all the technical hallmarks of BM (guitars, voice and drums used in a certain way, certain lyrical themes, certain visual imagery) but their music isn't "cold" then it's bad black metal, rather than non-black metal, I would say. Whether this applies to Dimmu.... I'unno.
