This one left me with mixed feeling. It seems to be Nevermore doing the Nevermore thing again and again.

Who do you want them to sound like?

I want them to surprise me which was not the case here.
FYI, my fav' Nevermore album is Dead Heart in a Dead World, OC is nowhere as good.

That's a great album but my fav is Dreaming Neon Black. I like the heaviness and eeriness of that album.

For some reason I never got into Dreaming Neon Black. In fact, it's my less favorite Nevermore album. I little too bland for my tastes.

Never listened to them....where's a good place to start?

I'd start from their self titled album and work your way up to This Godless Endeavor.

They get progressively better each album.

I'd start with Dead Heart in a Dead World then move up
to This Godless Endeavor then The Obsidian Conspiracy.

If you like those three albums chances are you'll like the others.

the best band to ever come out of the damp corners of Seattle

Wouldn't that honor go to Alice In Chains? :P

Anyway, I'll definitely need to give this album a listen soon. Dead Heart In A Dead World (which I actually listened to just two days ago :)) and This Godless Endeavor are both masterpieces IMO. And Enemies Of Reality is great if you can track down the remastered version. So I'm sure I'll like this at least as much as I like EOR.

The original EoR is just fine. Don't be a pansy!

The former was an unknown band to me before this, apparently a somewhat successful Canadian band that dabbled from blues to prog rock while taking hints from eastern musical styles and industrial alike. After listening their original, Nevermore has added a sweet Nile-esque acoustic intro while upping the heavy metal-factor of the rest to create a disturbingly quirky number, where most notably the combo of the keyboards and riffs in the opening remind me of Awake-era Dream Theater

First of all, the acoustic intro was not added by Nevermore it's part of the original. You probably listened to the video or radio single which doesn't contain the intro.

Second, The Tea Party was huge here in Canada. It also had quite a following in Australia and some parts of Europe where they toured often. Not to be disrespectful, but a little fact checking would be great before writing fallacies.

Good call on that intro-thing, in that case I indeed heard a radio version of the song. Corrected and cheers.

To otherwise offer a lil' rebuttal concerning fact checking which I am a great supporter of, I certainly looked into the band's background, especially because I'd never heard of them, and I'd dare say that "somewhat successful", as generally as I was using the term and with all due respect to your national scene, is quite an adequate synonym for "huge in Canada" and the additional territories, wouldn't you agree? In comparison, I'd surely use the same definition for bands that are huge in Finland and for example, central Europe but not a big name globally, in the standards of the metal scene that is. Nitpickery for sure on my part but as a language student, I found "fallacies" a little harsh when all we're dealing with in my mind besides the intro-claim is a question of perception, not fact. Just thought I'd hit that volley, no harm

I have major love for AIC, along with Pantera they pretty much salvage the 90s American big time-heavy music scene from utter mediocrity. But in all their greatness, as great as Nevermore to me they are not.

Quick question: Why the Atmospheric tag?

To me, the vibes and the amount of the mellow, eerie-melodic...well, simply atmospheric elements on this record is so considerable, when for example compared to Enemies Of Reality or This Godless Endeavour, that it warranted a specific "tagging".

I agree, after rereading myself the use of "fallacies" does sound too harsh. My bad!

This is personally my least favorite Nevermore album since the debut. It is Nevermore by the numbers. I understand that Nevermore wanted to go with a darker and heavier feel, but it ended up dumbing down an otherwise amazing near prog band.

As for Loomis, he has never sounded better technically, but the riffs are not memorable and outside of the first minute of the title track sound like retreads of former ideas. As for Warrel, man the guy is tired or something! The lyrics and melodies took a backseat to typical metal stereotypes. Warrel is a polarizing singer and some people hate his singing. This is the first time where I felt like I could understand why someone would dislike him.

I am so hard on Nevermore because I expect nothing less than excellence after having 4 brilliant albums in a row. Is it a bad album? Not at all. Just not anywhere near the quality that they have made me come to expect out of them. Especially considering the fact that it took 5 years.

Damn Canadian content laws. They made me forget that not everybody's heard of The Tea Party :(

The Canadian content law is favorable to Canadian artists so why are you damning it ? The Tea Party are Canadian...

Agreed, I have both versions and still prefer the original. There's something about the remaster that just sounds awful for me (probably because they just upped the treble in the mix :P)

Sounds like a lot of good and a lot of bad from folks, that usually means good in my book. Plus, its frikin Nevermore. I'm checking this out first chance I get.

I like the original because the production is very gritty, and it suits the music well. Just because it isn't squeaky clean doesn't mean it's not good.

Nah, the new Nevermore album is boring. After 2 songs and hearing Warrel scream "Rise, Rise!" 50 times I turn it off in embarrassment.

Judging an album after listening to 2 songs hardly seems like a fair judgement.
