Did they actually play non-stop Floyd, Sabbath and Priest in the 70s or was that just part of what they played, the rest being crap that's been forgotten in the fullness of time? I think you're being a bit selective - I'm sure in 40 years' time the bands remembered will not be the Britneys and Nickelbacks.
Nickelback will be playing on the classic rock station numerous times a day and Britney will be on the old pop radio. Come on now.
I don't really think taste in music has declined. There's going to be people that like the generic and the crap that's made for the masses always, and while there will be some bands that break through the crap will always be on top.
Music today is no different than the days of old. Like the older days there's still bands representing today that will be remembered and given credit like Pink Floyd or whatever.
I can tell you now, those bands will not be Nickelback and Britney Spears.
Public opinion, as far as I can tell, has turned against Nickelback. Everyone I know hates them (besides Frigid, but he's Swiss), and in 10 years, I don't think anyone will even remember them... if they do, it'll be with about as much fondness as people remember Vanilla Ice. Same with Britney Spears.
I'm with Zad, at least with The Mars Volta, I'm almost certain time will remember them as one of the greats of this generation. Maybe Mastodon? Tool for sure. Radiohead for sure. Bjork too.
I can't believe how some of you seem to totally ignore the great music coming out today. I suppose it might be a symptom of the "EVERYONE IS STUPID AND I'M SMARTER THAN PEOPLE" syndrome.
EDIT: Also, the Gorillaz. I need to get their new album.
