This is probably a foolish poll that reduces my tr00ness, but it's one much more worthy than other recent ones I've seen. The song Piranha by Exodus, we all know it - but in my opinion, Sepultura's cover of it from their Revolusongs EP beats the original. Now, before you go off WTFing, have another listen to both:

Original - Exodus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dkjQzVJr5c

Cover - Sepultura

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D61OJ_OoAdA

I might be the only one who votes Sepultura, but I stand by my opinion - faster, heavier, more intense, thrash as hell - it rips.

i've heard both, no contest

you can do better then this Zadster...

it's only heavier or more intense because of the production. The raw sound on BBB makes it one of the best metal albums (thrash or not) of all time. No silly cover will ever top it.

silly poll is silly

BBB is a great album, no doubt, but it's the perfect songwriting more than the raw production in my view - you really can't fault Sepultura's cover, other than the more modern production. Don't take this as an Exodus dis, I'm not about that here.

Never checked out Revolusongs before but I sided with Sepultura. I never hated them post-Max and the heavier production did that song a worthy facelift.

The Sepultura version sounds nice enough. But Zad, it's weird that you say that sepultura's cover can't be faulted "other than the more modern production". As far as I can hear, they haven't actually added anything new or done a fresh take on any individual elements. The only thing that's actually different is the sound of the production and the higher tempo.

Still, as I said it sounds alright.

The real gulf in quality comes with the vocals though. Derrick's cliched bark is no match for Balloff's classic wail, and the cover lacks colour as a result.

the fact that the Sep version has gotten 2 votes so far, and will probably get more, shows what a sad sad state MR is in.

I suppose it all comes down to how attached a person is to the original.

For you and I, choosing Sepultura in this particular scenario is completely insane.

That said, there have been plenty of times when I prefer a cover of a "classic" song, if the original is by a band I don't give two hoots about.

Why is his bark cliched? Strange thing to say.

Well it is a cover. Not all of them can be Shining doing 21st Century Schizoid Man, ffs.

I don't like that cover... wussing out of the fast unison lines is an offence that makes me yearn for the reintroduction of capital punishment.

As for the matter at hand, I was sorely tempted to find a reason to vote Sepultura purely to cause DW further emotional pain, but I can't do it this time.

It was just me and Zad. Our votes don't count in your eyes anyways, no?

Quite how anyone could stand Derrick's weak monotonous vocals, I cannot fathom.

Yeah, that's probably why I listen to Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald etc. so much

Wait, Ella Fitzgerald is black?!

Obviously that was a joke because Karmo thought I was calling him a racist when actually I was trying to make a joke but GOD next time I'll put a smiley face in there to assuage his conscience or something.

Well, all I meant was that there's a thousand singers who sound just like Derrick Green and only one who sounds like Paul Balloff.

And as for all covers not being as good as Shining...well, that's exactly right, isn't it? Most covers don't add anything, and therefore are relatively pointless. I don't see any reason to listen to this version because it is mimicry at best. Fine mimicry, but mimicry nonetheless.

A good example is the Flaming Lips recent Dark Side of the Moon cover album. The original is untouchable, perfect even. But the Flaming Lips made it sound completely different within the same framework. It actually gives you a compelling reason to put on the new version instead of just listening to the old version again.

This doesn't do that.
