I am lost. This album is 9 out of 10. Easily one of my favorite opeth albums.

i think it is laughable that borderline mediocrity like Still Life and Ghost Reveries get trumpeted these days when this stuff is considered somewhat passe. I suppose I should chalk this down to me being about 5 years older than most of you--I actually got into this band before Blackwater Park came out.

Sure the album is disjointed, but sometimes I wish Opeth never discovered the chorus. What they were doing from the beginning was near revolutionary in metal.

imo Opeth got a lot better when they started writing memorable riffs and melodies rather than throwing a huge bundle of unrelated guitar harmonies into a song. Also the bassist they had on their first two albums is annoying as all hell.

What do you mean? I mean, he's not the best, but not the worst either. The bass riff thingy in To Bid You Farewell is pretty great.

I think it's a really cool album. Not one of their best but I enjoy it. I probably give it a bit more leeway since it's their debut though.

He's good at playing bass but I don't think being that busy suits metal or any other kind of music. Bass should be filling the space between the guitar and the drums the majority of the time, not competing with the lead guitars for my attention.

Well, I love the sound he gave to those first two Opeth albums. But by the same token, I am glad we weren't given album after album of that.

Listening to Morningrise, and I can kinda see what you're getting at. He does have a very warbly tone, and it just cuts right through the the guitars sometimes. There are times when it's supposed to be in the forefront, but it can be a bit much at times. He's a good bassist, but his tone annoys me more than anything.

Still, Morningrise rules. It's like Orchid, but every aspect is improved upon. :dio:
