It's mostly crap, but there are some decent bands that fall within the genre. When you consider that Dissection technically falls into melodic black/death metal, then you can clearly see that good melodic death metal can exist

Sacramentum also fall within that melodic black/death metal spectrum (leaning more to melodic death on the debut) and they're quite good as well.
Technically there's plenty of reason to put Dissection in this category, but they're hardly representative to melodic death because there's just so much more about them. That black flavour of their music and the aesthetics manages to create an atmosphere that, atleast to me, is very different from the likes of In Flames and other 90's melodic death. And as we all know, music is all about atmosphere.
But if we count melodic death/black into the category of melodic death refered to in this thread, then there's plenty of good stuff.
Aside from the already mentioned almighty Dissection, and Sacramentum, whose record Far Away From The Sun I'd kill to own, I'd like to give some credit to Dawn. Their record Slaughtersun is absolutely brilliant stuff.
Other bands that are worthy include Unanimated, Vinterland, Decameron and Gates of Isthar.
I take pride in that all of those bands are Swedish, the melodic black/death metal genre is probably the sole reason why Sweden is my favorite metal country..
As for more standard melodic death metal, it's pretty blah to me. There's Amon Amarth and At the Gates which are brilliant of course.
Then there's In Flames and Dark Tranquillity which are good but kind of tiresome in the long run. Skyfire's first record was good. Children Of Bodom's first three album were good. Eternal Tears of Sorrow are alright.
But there's just so much generic melodic death metal, loads of CoB and In Flames clones, which kind of ruins it for me. For every good band there's 10 that are a real chore to listen to.
So, if melodic black/death was included in this thread, which I don't think was intented, then my vote would be great. Otherwise, put me on blah
