I believe the term is proto metal, is it not?

Regardless, this is my favourite Deep Purple album and very deserving of classic status. I know everybody loves the song Child in Time, but my favourite track is definitely gotta be Hard Lovin' Man. The keyboard/organ at the beginning is like an acid trip. The riffing is amazing, the soloing is godly, and all in all one of my favourite songs ever.

the fact that most people are ignoring this gives me little hope for humanity.

I'm not ignoring, I just don't have an immediate response. I'm a Deep Purple noob. All I know is 'Smoke On The Water.' Listening to 'Child In Time' and I really like it.

All I really know is "Smoke On The Water," and if I never hear that song again, it'll be too soon.

If you like classic rock I would give them a shot beyond Smoke. I'd check out the songs Stormbringer, Black Night, Hush, and Perfect Stangers before I ignore them entirely.

Not much to say other than "hell yeah this is good". But if it will restore your faith in humanity:

Hell yeah, this is good!

this is not a rock album, this is proto-metal

Yeah I know. But if he really likes classic rock (which I'm sorry to break to it to you, this is in the same vein as albeit different enough to make it proto-metal) then he might like this more than he likes Smoke.

I don't really get the difference... surely metal is an offshoot of rock music, and the earliest metal bands were basically hard rock bands.

There are hard rock bands and then there are hard rock bands which influenced metal is the distinction maybe? He's the facist about it so I'll let him define it.

I was being silly.

Silly goose.

I know hard/classic/70s rock = proto-metal, I was just making a point.

I don't know what I'm trying to say exactly, as I am at work now. All I am getting at is this album kicks ass and Deep Purple is so much more than Smoke on the Water.
