I can't imagine any situation where nuclear war would seem possible. I feel like all these back ass dictators aren't ballsy enough to do it in fear of the repercussions. Who knows though?

Good question... I just did some research and it might be something to do with its relation to the German word Scheisse. Alternatively I would guess it is just a corruption that emerged in some British regions. Cos the major Brit cities developed before regular means of transport and communication existed, different towns even now have very different ways of talking. (at least, that's my guess at why there is such an array of completely different accents within such a small space)

According to the bbc it comes from Scotland originally, so there you go, they really mangle words up there.

Yep. Scheisse in German, Schijt in Dutch, probably rather similar in Norwegian/Swedish. The short i in shit is a bastardisation.
