I dunno if I'd agree that Converge are sounding more like Neurosis & co on this album since a handful of slower and doomier songs isn't anything new for them. I do agree that it's awesome and probably my favourite album so far this year. I'd give it 95 with 5 points taken off because Wishing Well isn't as great as the rest of the songs, and it comes right after Worms Will Feed which is the best song on the album.

Also disagree that No Heroes is inconsistent. Every song on that album kicks tons of ass imo

Oh yeah, I find No Heroes awesome as well, but yeah, I find the level of quality more varying there than here. Inconsistent might not be the right word. YOu've got a point there.

As for the Neurosis part, I don't know, I just felt that vibe a lot more here.

All the songs of No Heroes are great, but after Gim Heart/Black Rose, the songs just don't seem to quite fit together and a lot of the momentum they spent the first half building up is lost.

Also, I so want this album.

I think Wishing Well is pretty damn awesome...the last minute kicks all kinds of ass. But yeah, I agree that this may be the most consistent Converge album yet, cause every song just absolutely slays and is memorable in its own way. I'm leaning towards giving this five stars, although it hasn't been long enough for that yet...but still. And is it just me or is Axe to Fall (song) fucking intense? Kinda does for me what No Heroes (song) and Concubine/Fault and Fracture did on previous albums...

Got this in the mail today, listened to it, and I have to say that Wretched World is the best song released this year. Dark Horse and Worms Will Feed are probably top 5 too. Cruel Bloom is one of those cruel "song that's really fucking good but not like anything else the band has done" tracks.

Absolutely agreed on Wretched World. Stunning tune.

The lyrics are rough. Brings back very bad memories for me.

I've heard people liken this to Mastodon in some ways, can anyone confirm?

They are similar in a lot of ways but also pretty different. Converge are more intense/emotional while Mastodon are more melodic, metal, and proggy.

For some reason this album the more I listen to it is coming off as so-so compared to other Converge. I like it and it's great but it's losing its initial charm.

Just checked out Dark Horse on youtube, it's a great song, much better than the stuff I checked out from Jane Doe, although that's probably because I hate hardcore.

So this still rules. After many listens of this and You Fail Me, Converge is now, without a doubt, my favorite band. Listening to the first four songs of this the other day made me want to punch someone in the face, in a good way. It's not even fair for other bands that try to make heavy music...
