I was expecting much more based on the two tracks they released prior to the album. I don't like the guitar sound at all and was hoping for more variety from Lombardo. Also, I wanted Araya to shoot for some of the vocal styles he did on albums like South of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss. Not an album that will have alot of playing time from me. I like most of the songs on Christ Illusion better than the ones on this album.

Didn't find any real value in this. Probably won't listen to it more than the few times I already have.

I'll need to give this a fair listen when I have the time. Then I'll post my thoughts.

BTW, what's actually wrong with Playing With Dolls? I haven't heard it yet (the title is intriguing for a Slayer song, though), but judging from how you described it, did Slayer make a metal ballad or something?

Playing with Dolls is not a ballad, it's a killer song.
And I love the album. Killer trax all the way. Album of the year for me!!!!!!!!!! There's no other thrash band, young or old, who can have that level of excellence.

Playing With Dolls is nothing special. It's Slayer trying to be modern, which is something not surprising after DIM and GHUA. Simply just not a very good track.

That being said, WPB is about as moving as stonehenge. Some pretty good songs, and a solid album, but there's absolutely nothing new or surprising, and Araya's voice is just plain bad at this point. Christ Illusion was better.

I've only given this one listen but it felt pretty average, certainly nothing spectacular. Christ Illusion had it's share of fillers but it had some stand out tracks as well such as "flesh storm" and cult".. when I listened to WPB nothing really stood out for me, but like I said I've only given it one listen so maybe it grows on you.

I think it's the best Slayer since a long time. No boring Catatonic, no New/Groove/Modern Metal Crap like Stain of Mind, but nearly only high speed tracks (7 from 11 could have been on Reign in Bllood!). Ok, the guitars are sounding a little bit too thin, but that's better than the low tuned sound from some of the latter records.

I would give 90 from 100. Only Human Strain and Playing with dolls are a little bit mediocre. The rest is Slayer like it should be.

There are a lot of other bands in the same boat as Slayer that need to throw in the towel along with them though.

Hm, I think Arayas style on WPB is not so far away from SITA. And SOH was VERY lame for a slayer record, and I think they should go more in the direction of Hell Awaits. More demonic, more longer but fast songs with metal - and less punk - riffs. That would be cool.

The problem with SOH is that it was too obviously an "experimental album." The band just didn't sound totally comfortable playing such a slow(er) and more groove-oriented style of metal. SITA is where it all came together for the band IMO, as they took the best of both RIB and SOH and combined them into what's IMO the greatest thrash metal album ever made.

Well, having never been a huge Slayer fan I can say that what I've heard from this album makes me not want to buy it, or ever listen to any of its songs again. The video that new guy posted earlier is absolute garbage and the song sounds like generic slayer. These guys have lost all motivation and are just putting out the same shit over and over again. Generally I like that in a band.....but not when its dull.

They will never release anything similar to my two favorite Slayer releases ever agian (Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel). So I can confidently say that Slayer is dead to me.

76 doesnt sound very fair, at least something in 80- 85 range. they are getting old but they are still one of the most passionate, honest, brutal thrash bands out there. i think conceptually this album was more profound comparing to Christ illusion

Slayer should have went back 20 years to what they did best before they jumped the shark with Divine Intervention. Seasons In The Abyss will always be my favorite Slayer album with Reign In Blood and South of Heaven a close second. Show No Mercy after that.

Very dry stuff. Listening to Americon's lyrics, I could've very well been listening to Green Day. And both Playing with Dolls and Not of this God sucked.

A step up, but not by much. Death Magnetic and Endgame are far better.
