Sorry? All I'm saying is that hearing an album in the same key can get boring.

Oh that was in response to hellraiser. The how did you get good thing was a different train of thought

I really have never understood how it matters that its all in the same key- unless you mean you'd like some major key stuff, in which I hear ya.

IMO it is all about the relation between notes... whether the root is E or F sharp or whatever is irrelevant, surely.

It wouldn't seem that way, but there is a certain cadence, a certain tonality (I find, at least) to each note, and a monotony to hearing the exact same key used repetitively. Like how Tony Iommi insists on playing the paranoid riff on the 12th fret of the low E and A strings, rather than the 7th fret of the A and D strings.

I can possibly see that if you're listening to an album through from start to finish. I can also see it mattering if someone has perfect pitch. As I don't, I don't really mind. It reminds me of Nigel Tufnel talking about D minor being "the saddest of all keys"... the point of the joke to me being that no minor key is inherently sadder sounding than any other.

If knowing a thing or two about musical theory can make good albums boring then I'm going to go ahead and say ignorance is bliss.

See this is why I got my new signature... switch "sciences" for "knowledge of music theory", and it applies exactly to this occasion.

Better yet, swap "science" for "Irish!" :)

Like this band lots. Early At the Gates, and then this band....and then nothing else from this genre....with the exception of Jester Race.

Check out Arsis. If you can't enjoy that there may be no hope for you.

I will check them out, but as far as there being no hope for me, I would respectfully have to disagree. My metal credentials I believe are well-founded.

I'm glad you got the cred but if you can't enjoy something as fun as Arsis then I'd be worried.

It's pretty easy to ignore. There's a little voice in my head that says "oh hay he's playing octaves" every now and then but then it goes away.

I have no goddamn clue why people think this; it's actually really frustrating. Does knowing a thing or two about grammar, sentence structure, and literary devices make good books boring? Does knowing a thing or two about lighting, camera angles, and dialogue make a good movie boring?

No? Then why would knowing a thing or two about music theory make good albums boring?

If anything, it makes me appreciate good albums more when I can say "Hey, that's a really cool way to express a ii - V - I cadence," or "Hey, they're in the mixolydian mode here," or something. It's not as if knowing theory sucks the life out of music, that is such a fallacy.

I can kind of see where Radagast is coming from as far as being a response to Fridge, but learning how music works has never made me like or dislike anything I wouldn't have normally. It's made me appreciate stuff I like more because it's made what makes a good song less magical and more substantial.

I said IF, my post was lighthearted and just taking the piss out of Frigid.

Good, because if you were being serious, I would fly to Scotland and cut your nuts off.

Yeah, the thing is that "everything is in the same key" is a complaint that many people have, even if they know nothing about theory. I've heard people who don't know a thing about theory say they don't like albums "because everything's based around the same note," or something, which is the same complaint, but saying everything's in e minor is just being specific about it.

And there's definately still plenty of magic in music, but being able to determine what makes it magical really helps me appreciate it that much more.
