I'm planning on buying a new electric soon... I'm looking for something unique, reliable, and that costs $800 or less. I'm leaning towards getting a semi-hollow, but I don't have much experience with those, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Any advice?

Go in and try some out; what may feel right in my hands, or sound good to my ears, may not for you.
That's really all the advice I can give you.

Definitely new, possibly VERY slightly used. I would never sell any of my guitars and the fact that someone else would dissuades me a little. :D

As far as sound goes, I'm looking for something with a wide range of tones... as long as I can get a good blues sound out of it, I'll be happy. I'm looking at a new B.C. Rich Dagger, but I've never played one and don't know how good they are... http://www.beyondeleven.com/ProductDeta ... ger-SEDGBO

I would dissuade you from your dissuasion towards used guitars. You can get some ridiculously awesome guitars for quite cheap that way- my first electric, a Vantage Avenger, cost me 100 when it should have gone for 500, and I got my second, a Jackson RR1, for half of what it would cost new. Both were in excellent condition. For $800, you could get a hell of a nice used guitar.

As for the sound- if you want a more bluesy sound out of a metal guitar (and I always recommend Jacksons for metal guitars), you can always just change one of the pickups- usually a Seymour Duncan can produce a nice, bluesy tone on any guitar, and. As for BC Riches... I was never a big fan of those, but to each his own.

But yep, in the end, just go to as many stores as you can and try try try until they kick you out.

See, I've never liked B.C. Rich guitars either, (most feel like toys to me) but I've seen nothing but positive reviews for the Big Dagger. I'll see if I can find it in a shop somewhere and try it out.

And I'd love to find something that can give me both good blues AND metal tone, which is why I was leaning towards the B.C. Semi-Hollow.

As for used guitars... I may have to look around, but chances are I'll end up buying new. The only used I ever bought was a Jay Turser V, (a BEAUTIFUL guitar with a great hard rock / blues tone) and the wiring in it is messed up so that it'll just stop working once in a while... easy to fix, but that kinda put me off on used guitars.

I have an Ibanez artcore semi hollow body and it's great although getting anything resembling a metal tone out of it might be hard. Awesome for blues/jazz/classic rock kinda sounds though.

My personal experience of semi-hollows is limited. I do , however, have a friend who owns a PRS SE Custom SH (http://prsguitars.com/secustomsh/index.html), and it does sound beautiful and airy, perfect for bluesy stuff. Not sure about metal tones, though.

I myself own a PRS SE Standard, and the quality frankly amazed me. Incredibly comfortable to play, rock-solid tuning stability, etc.

Ah yes, and there's a demo on yt.

To be honest with you, I would get a Gibson Les Paul Classic or Standard, both of whom could be available for that price used. Excellent all-round guitars, and those burstbuckers is fucking excellent for everything from country to metal, depending on the amp of course.

If you're after something strictly bluesy you should look into Fender, as you will get an excellent US made Stratocaster or Telecaster used for that price.

I'm waiting for a good deal on one of these used so I can start making brutal metal sounds.

Well thanks! I've hardly ever ventured out of Alto territory though... see, I go to a fairly small school and we don't have many people in our band, and since I'm the only strong Alto player, I'm stuck with that until some Freshman saxophone prodigy decides to appear by some miracle. :lame: I do really enjoy playing the Bari sax whenever I have the chance though.

I always found the baritone to be quite boring to play. Tenor on the
other hand, is great! (I played Alto for many years, but then
switched to Tenor when we needed one).

Soprano sax is cool too, but a bit more difficult to keep a nice tone
I thought.

.:crast:.
