I dunno about boring but I can't say I'm going to jump at the chance to spin a Motorhead album.

Taking two different genres and slapping them together does not necessarily make good or even interesting music. You could use the same argument to argue that coffee is good served with basil, a pickled egg and spoonful of mayonnaise in it. Is it unconventional? Sure. Does that make it good? Well, I haven't tried that particular combination, but probably not.

Eluveitie is bad, bad music and Motörhead pwns the living shit in all colours and consistencies out of 90% of the bands discussed on this site.

As for Danish Metal bands, well..

King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Pretty Maids, Artillery... hmm... overall we can't really compete with any of the mentioned countries. We've got a decent underground, but not good enough to be worth a mention in this context.

Erm...anyways, I'd say that Canada and the US beat out England if the thread here is just about those three. Canada has some great thrash acts, not to mention quite a few good black metal acts like Sorcier des glaces, Monarque, Weapon, Akitsa and so on, in addition to the usual tech. death culprits. Between Canada and the US, they definitely win out as far as death metal is concerned, but I would take Canada for black metal over the States for sure, despite Judas Iscariot being one of my all-time favourite bands. With thrash its tough to say. To me Razor is one of the most kick ass and consistant thrash bands in the world, not to mention that Slaughter's Strappado is one of my favourite all-time thrash releases. While we may not have as many thrash acts as most other places, the quality of the few is pretty damned high if you ask me. The US, however, has sheer quantity on its side. There are so many great thrash acts out of the States it would be hard to say that Canada really tops them. But at the same time I wouldn't want answering the US over Canada to downplay the awesomeness of some of Canada's old school thrash acts.

However, if we're talking the best countries/regions for metal Scandinavia will always get my number one vote.

Yeah no, sure Canada and US have some of the best Metal, im actually a big fan of US power metal and US/Canadian Thrash, but nothing beats the UK:

Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Motorhead

Really there is no competition.

Honestly other than the founding fathers plus a handful of other bands, the UK hasn't produced much else that interests me. Of course, without them we arguably wouldn't even be having this discussion, and so I feel pretty ridiculous saying "other than the founding fathers blah blah", but at the same time having the discussion becomes totally null and void if we take the approach that the UK beats all else for that reason. While I love me some Sabbath and Motorhead, I don't feel that they alone make the UK the best country of the three for metal despite the fact that without these bands metal may very not have been what it is today. Hopefully this makes some kind of sense to someone other than me :P

I agree... Quality rather than quantity, with the UK. And the "quality" bit generally refers to bands of historic import rather than current awesomeness.

That said, it's not JUST the founding fathers. The early extreme metal scene owes a lot to the UK, also.

How about we can each choose five bands from our own geographical regions of origin and see who wins?

I am from the Midlands, so I will say-

1. Black Sabbath
2. Judas Priest
3. Motorhead (Lemmy is from Stoke-on-Trent)
4. Napalm Death
5. Cathedral

Jesus, um,...

1. Syth
2. Amok

You can add Paradise Lost to that list.

Into Eternity, Forgotten Tales, Kataklysm and Cryptopsy are some of the well know Canadien Metal bands. I guess it depends to which style you actually listen too

I'd say Europe if t was in the equation.

I mean just with Finland , Sweden and Norway it covers the majority of my favourite metal bands like Dark Tranquillity, Katatonia, Swallow the Sun, Nightwish, Entwine, Sonata Arctica, Sentenced, Evergrey, Tristania, Communic, Sins Of Thy Beloved just to name of few that span several genres.

Plus most of the recent successful North American metal bands owe a lot to their European counterparts for their sound.

Ok fair point but i wasnt actually thinking of historical importance when i named those bands, i really do think that those bands are the best metal bands ever, specially Sabbath, Maiden and Priest.

*nod* That's where we differ then. While I'm a fan of Sabbath and Motorhead in particular (which isn't to say that I don't respect all four bands), I can't say that I consider them to be the best bands in metal. One might argue for them as some of the best live bands though. I've seen Motorhead, Sabbath and Maiden live and they were all pretty fucking impressive live acts.
