It's not like everyone wasn't shagging teenagers back in the day - Chuck Berry's career was ruined over it, after all - but the difference is that most didn't drug them first and then skip bail. You can offer up arguments like his parents' deaths and his wife's horrific murder, but at the end of the day, he drugged and raped a thirteen year old, and should face justice. He'd already made Chinatown, right?

I'm so torn. He was fucked up because his wife was murdered. Anjelica Huston has defended his acts as being acts of a horribly distraught person. But then again he drugged and had sex with a 13 year old girl. Huston said she could've appeared as older due to her looks but he still drugged her with qaaludes. Then again he settled with her monetarily and she herself doesn't what him to be convicted. But then he made the Ninth Gate and when I'm not in the mood to find that movie funny, it is a horrid travesty to my eyes.

I'm glad he was arrested. I think it's pretty fucked up he was able to plead guilty and then not serve any sentence by running away to France. Not that I really knew anything about this before yesterday, but yeah.

he shouldn't get a pass because of how good his movies are; Polanski should serve out a term in prison based on the severity of the offense and then be released like any other fellow who drugs and rapes a 13-year-old.

True. Still right to be pissed off, however - far more has actually been done for peace that deserves recognition than Obama's message of hope. And fine, steps towards disarmament, but still.
