John Fahey owns. So do dudes influenced by him like Jack Rose, Sir Richard Bishop, and another guy who's name escapes me right now.

edit: James Blackshaw!

Leot Kottke is also pretty cool although my admiration for him is more like "wow, impressive" rather than "Fuck. Roots sinking into earth. Abandoned buildings. Whoa."

There'll be a new Neun Welten out later this year. Looking forwards.

The Pogues, Flogging Molly. I like punk in my folk.

I like folk music but don't listen to it all too often. I prefer French Canadian folk music like Le Vent du Nord or east coast Canadian folk like Natalie MacMaster. Love me some Irish, Scandinavian and Ukrainian folk music as well.

Duchess, you know Valentin Clastrier?
The man, a hurdy gurdy player, mixes avant-garde and folk and it's great.

I've heard of him and only a handful of material (perhaps I should give it another go), but I typically prefer traditional folk music over mixing it with modern styles. One of the few exceptions for me (other than when MacMaster occasionally does it) is the band Great Big Sea who are folk rock.

Whats some dark but catchy acoustic music with high pitched vocals? Like the two acoustic songs on new TMV

I only really listen to the folk artists lumped in with the indie crowd, such as Iron & Wine and Horse Feathers. So I may be too hipster for this thread.

Bon Iver owns.

As does Pantaleimon, Current 93 and Elliot Smith (If he counts as folk?)

They have a new album out, no? I hear about them every so often, generally around the release of an album, but never remember to check them out properly, should review them...

agreed with the latter two. Awesome shit tho I'm not so sure about elliot smith being folk. Probably is not. Pantaleimon, I haven't heard.
