I really would like to avoid another discussion like this, but whatever... I'm not primarily and indie fan, I'm a metal fan, but I like some indie music too. I don't like indie enough to go to an indie board, but I'd like to discuss indie with other metal fans who also enjoy some indie, and indie's relationship with metal.

Yeh, that, basically.

And what is up with the whole "you're approaching it the wrong way"-bullshit? Either you like it or you don't.

Agreed. I can live with "give it a few more listens to see if it grows on you", but not that.

Fair enough...what I was trying to say is that it's easier to like if you just chill out to it rather than scrutinize it or whatever. But your point is well taken.

On a side note from the Favorite Song thread, I have yet to hear a band that I would consider indie metal. Not Mastodon, not Isis, and I haven't heard much of Boris but probably not them either.

By indie metal I mean metal that attracts an indie rock audience. It's not like indie is anything more than an umbrella term anyway, rather than something that describes the actual sound.

Yeah, that's definitely true. I just want to hear a band that fuses fuzzy indie acoustic stuff with metal. I haven't heard anybody that really does that and I think it could be really good...most metal bands that use acoustic passages do so in a pretty sinister way.

I get what you're saying, and I like indie rock for the most part. I agree that you have to be in a certain mood to listen to it, but I doubt anyone who doesn't like it on first listen is going to like it any more in another setting or mindset.

Hell, I like a lot of different musics, as you know, but I don't spend the majority of my time discussing them here.
Once in a while, sure, but an overwhelming majority of the time, no.

Metal:

Thrash
Black
a very small smattering of old-school Death Metal, i.e. Obituary, Death, Morbid Angel
NWOBHM / Traditional

Non-Metal:

60's -70's Rock (ELP, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, BOC, Tull, etc.)
Deathrock / Batcave
Surf / Psychobilly
whatever Dead Can Dance, Killing Joke and the like are called
Motorhead...

and the occasional oddball tune here and there.

Ok.
It all fits together pretty well.
Not that I was expecting jazz or soul music anyway...

Since Adam mentioned them, I'm going to point out how I love Shellac and Big Black.

Surf? Can you recommend anything in that genre a metalhead might like? (I'm not joking or being sarcastic)

And whats Deathrock/Batcave?

Anyway Indie mostly sucks, but I don't mind Arcade Fire or Radiohead.

Surf: LINK WRAY!!!

Deathrock/Batcave (as it's basically the same thing): Alien Sex Friend, Bauhaus, Virgin Prunes, Christian Death, etc. Something that is also called gothic but better name it batcave with all the crappy goth metal coming out nowadays
