The Artic Monkeys are bearable I guess kind of, Bloc Party is mediocre background music with occasional gay bits. Indie is shite, for shite, by shite. Maybe a bit unfair, but you need to come to England to see what I mean.

I dislike The Arctic Monkeys, I dislike Bloc Party, and Joanna Newsom's about as enjoyable as nails on a chalkboard.

I'd like to think this thread would discuss a higher standard of indie music than The Enemy or the fucking Pigeon Detectives.

Ah, the fucking Pigeon Detectives. *shudder*

Haven't listened to any proper indie for ages. Neofolk's the way to go, Angels Of Light ftw.

Yeah, I've been getting into indie lately. My knowledge is really pretty limited, but some great bands that haven't been mentioned in this thread yet are Neutral Milk Hotel, Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, and The Flaming Lips. Those are pretty much the only indie bands I've listened to, haha, but they're all great. I will check out Cursive promptly.

EDIT: Also, I think the problem that you guys have with indie is that you're not approaching it the right way. For me, indie is just music that I put on when I want to sit back and chill...it's definitely not stuff that you rock out too. Sure, I find that a lot of it has artistic value as well, but it's no biggie if you think it doesn't...if you think the whole genre is absolute shit, though, you're probably taking it too seriously.

On a side note from the Favorite Song thread, I have yet to hear a band that I would consider indie metal. Not Mastodon, not Isis, and I haven't heard much of Boris but probably not them either.

heatseeker, put on Fever To Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. That album fucking rocks out, Karen O has incredible energy.

By indie metal I mean metal that attracts an indie rock audience. It's not like indie is anything more than an umbrella term anyway, rather than something that describes the actual sound.

Indie music...

...fuck off with that hipster shit.
Why is there so much discussion here about stuff like this?

I honestly wonder if I am in the right place, sometimes.

I mean, discussion about non-Metal is fine once in a moon, but there is a certain faction here that discusses anything BUT Metal about 95% of the time here... and no, I don't consider that "core" bullshit real metal.
WTF?

No need to be butthurt over it, just an observation.

I was big into indie rock in high school. In fact, that's how I first got into Neurosis. My friends were in a band, and had their CD's recorded by Steve Austin of Today is the Day and Bob Weston of Shellac. Steve actually turned them onto Neurosis when Through Silver in Blood first came out, and me by association. Here's the kind of stuff I used to listen to, and still do on occasion:

Shellac
Fugazi
The Jesus Lizard
Tortoise
Slint
Zeni Geva
June of '44
Big Black
Rapeman
A Minor Forest
Tar

Gotta see Banshee's point.

And what is up with the whole "you're approaching it the wrong way"-bullshit? Either you like it or you don't.

Agreed. I can live with "give it a few more listens to see if it grows on you", but not that.

You've got to admit it works for musics such as atonal classical contemporary, abstract electronica or free jazz... For plain indie rock, it's not an argument you'll ever see me use.

Of course not. You know despite our past differences, I have a lot of respect for you and your knowledge of Metal, and music, in general.
The difference being, you talk about Metal and metal related topics the majority of the time; I am talking about the inverse of that.
And to be fair, most of the posters here do the same.

Like I said, not putting anyone down or dogging anyone, just curious as to why so much discussion is made by a few here (I don't need to name names) about non- metal music. This is a primarily Metal site; there are other sites for discussing Indie,
Post - this, Post - that, etc. at length.

But don't mind me, WTF do I know?

I really would like to avoid another discussion like this, but whatever... I'm not primarily and indie fan, I'm a metal fan, but I like some indie music too. I don't like indie enough to go to an indie board, but I'd like to discuss indie with other metal fans who also enjoy some indie, and indie's relationship with metal.

I can see that, my point was regarding indie music.

Yeah, you're right. I guess I was thinking in the context of indie rock, but you are right.

To Elias' point, I agree also. I like to discuss a bit of non metal here and there as well, and no better place to do than among people I mostly share the same musical taste with. I've found a few oddball indie bands that I've really enjoyed through people's recs here.
