as long as it doesn't involve guys bragging to me about how they paid 350$ for a Vlad tepes tape then I don't particularly care what the imagery involves.

If you remove the satanic symbolism from Venom, you get Motörhead. Or take away the corpsepaint from King Diamond or Immortal. It wouldn't be the same. Esp. on the stage, the show is sometimes just as important as the music. A black metal band in with yellow or blue t-shirts and red or green pants and flowers in the Hair and a peace sign on the drums would look a little bit silly...or not?

I'd say the unifying aspect of bm is that it's music designed to appeal to negative emotions/ evoke a negative atmosphere.

That would include anti-religious anger, depression, racial hate, sadness at the modern world and a longing to return to the good old pagan times, etc.

As long as the composition techniques/production/playing are in the ballpark and its some kind of negative atmosphere/emotion (eg hate, sadness, depression) being portrayed its bm......

At least thats how I think of it.

I think that is not BM - that's stupid. They can hate all human, but special races is a thin ice to walk.

No, they are still Black Metal - but not because they are racist. That makes them idiots too. Or elsewise: Racism is not necessary to make Black Metal.

I think some sort of hatred is necessary though, whether it's at Christianity, or life itself, or TEH J00S, or even your parents. Black Metal is supposed to be opposition itself, anti-something, so racism is a relevant topic. Doesn't mean that I agree with it, of course.

Yeah but the point is, they are expressing racial hate through the music. Le black metal needs some kind of hateful/sorrowful emotion to back it up. Hating teh Jews is as valid a reason to make hateful music as any.

Maybe when Gaahl's clothing designer boyfriend breaks up with him we shall have some new and groundbreaking themes in bm presented to us by God Seed (:lol:). The day ballads enter black metal Or perhaps just a new assault charge.

Acoustic/piano interludes (or the entire Kveldssanger album) are black metals version of the ballad anyway.

The same with so-called suicidal BM; some of it is pretty decent, but the whole premise seems to be the height of pretentious, attention seeking twat-hood. Hate living? Do it already.

Most of my problems with Black Metal have to do with the sybolism and all that crap, satanic lyrics and imagery is a big part of metal and i have no problem with that, but metal should be about the music, the whole im more trver than you because i kill jews, truly beleive in satan, burn churches, hate mankind and all of the phillosophy crap has nothing to do with metal and is actually detrimental to the black metal genre, i find very sad that a lot of kids fall for this kind of gimmicks and cosider them to be "trv" black metallers, i tell you people that the worst kind of posers that i have ever met are the so called "trve black metal" fans although its also true that the most knowledgeable and dedicated metalheads i know like Black Metal too.

I for one dont hate genre, Bathory is one of my favourite bands and i do enjoy ocasionally some Darkthrone, Mayhem, Immortal, etc. its the whole "gimmicky" part of the genre that i hate with a passion.

Trouble is, the fact that so many Churches were burnt and people killed over it does give it a certain je ne sais quoi... The sheer intensity and depth of feeling in Black Metal is rarely reproduced in other genres.
