Alexander the Great and Seventh Son... are two of my fav Maiden's songs. Why don't you like them?

Did you just manage to name the two best tracks from Somewhere In Time?!

Both albums are classics and incredibly good. And listening to them both it's freaking hard to decide which one is best... the thing that struck me was how much more mature the songs seem on those two albums when I compared them to the albums before and after. They really had a thing going for them at that period and I wish they had continued that sound on NPFTD instead of trying to return to the slightly more "in-your-face" attitude of earlier discs.

Not for me, they aren't. Deja-Vu is an okay song with a terrible chorus and Alexander the Great is, imho, Maiden's worst epic of the first 6 albums of their discography. Way better than what most bands are able to produce but substandard for Iron Maiden.

Deja Vu, for the record, is awesome. Those harmonies in the middle perfectly capture that futuristic, sci fi sound.

Fair enough. Bad Maiden is still great metal. :)

I just put together a cool best-of compilation of 80's era Maiden (minus FOTD) with Bruce on vocals. I'm not saying those are my favourites, but for me it would be the ultimate list of songs to give to someone unfamiliar with Maiden.

The Number Of The Beast
Revelations
Aces High
Wasted Years
Can I Play With Madness
Run To The Hills
Flight Of Icarus
2 Minutes To Midnight
Heaven Can Wait
The Evil That Men Do
Hallowed Be Thy Name
The Trooper
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Stranger In A Strange Land
The Clairvoyant
Fear Of The Dark

Pretty good compilation but i will add Purgatory and you missed the best songs from Fear Of The Dark besides the tittle track: "Judas Be My Guide" and "Afraid To Shoot Strangers"

Those were in my first list (not Judas, I don't like that song) but considering the limitations of cd length, tough choices had to be made.

Does nobody else think that Die With Your Boots On is an essential Maiden track?

Finally someone who thinks Como Estais Amigos is a great track. But I see you haven't included The Clansman? I would take that over Como... any day. And since the matter of Somewhere In Time came up, I would say that is the weakest of the albums upto Seventh Son. It isn't a bad one though, but compared to the others, it isn't as great.

I would agree with Lucifer here. I love that track too. But essential? Nah.
