I'd like to get into this band. I listened to some samples from Elegy and Thousand Lakes on Amazon.com, and they're awesome. I'm planning to start with Elegy. What does everybody here think of them?

I love everything they've done. Elegy is a pivotal album in their career. It's often cited as their classic, but after that one they got fairly mellow for a while. Death metal growls all but disappeared on the next three (Far From The Sun probably being the worst).

Then on Eclipse, they brought them back. Not on the whole album, but for a good portion of it. Musically they're a bit different now than their early days, or even the Elegy period which was fairly progressive for the style, but the latest three (or two, I'll assume the next one will rule) have been excellent.

Many will tell you to avoid Tuonela, Am Universum, and Far From The Sun, but I think they're good albums, really good in the case of the first two. Far From The Sun can be a bit spotty. The Karelian Isthmus, Tales From The Thousand Lakes, and Elegy are must-haves, though.

Here's a killer track from Eclipse.

I almost shit myself when I heard them doing this stuff again. Bands rarely change so drastically and then manage to channel their roots again so well.

"Alone" is an great song. If I like that, would I like the rest of the album?

I listened to Elegy yesterday. I really like it. Reminds me somewhat of Jester Race era In Flames.

Yeah. I know it's weird, but that's what I thought of when listening to the album.
