They don't have their own courts. Islamic arbitration committees have started emerging under existing arbitration law. No law has been changed to allow them. It seems to me that it is far more likely that the law, if it does change, would be to legislate to bring them under control, not to give them more freedom. (Particularly on an issue such as marriage which is sensitive).

They handle mediation in financial and divorce cases largely; no stonings or hand severings here, I'm sorry to disappoint any rubberneckers. They certainly don't have the capacity to overule existing British law, and I can't imagine that they ever will.

As I said, we already have allowances for Jewish customs. You don't think any religious groups should have these facilities; fair enough. But the way in which Muslim practices are singled out as a subject for hysteria and hatred is, IMO, more of a problem than the fact that these things exist. Again, bear in mind "Shariah" could mean executing a woman for getting raped, but in this case what it generally means is financial dealings such as the receipt of interest etc.

Quote:
The problem is with the expansionist values that lie at the core of the Muslim ideology. Taking what the Koran, the Hadith, and the religious leaders in Islam are actually saying at face value would make any sort of mosque seem like appeasement and capitulation.

Nonsense, how many Muslims do you meet in day to day life that try to convert you, or try to subsume you into their culture?

Look, as a white European, what would you think if you met a Muslim, or an Asian, or an African who was suspicious of you because of the "expansionist values" that your civilisation has "at its core"? (And I'm sure you will agree that white Europeans have done far more expanding in the past 100 years than Muslims have). You'd think that was stupid, right?

Quote:
And what about the fuckwit calling Muslim suicide bombers "anti-muslim terrorists"? Same person who stopped Geert Wilders from entering, no?

I don't actually know what you're referring to here.

Agreed on the first bit, it is a bit exaggerated.

Btw, I meet a lot of Muslims (as well as Christians, Mormons, etc) who try and convince me of the infallibility and truth of their religion. Of course, this is because I go out of my way to find opposing religious opinions to mine, but still. I have many female friends who have been mistreated by Muslim guys as well, for example. It's just not an ideology that should be granted even the minimum level of appeasement. The feminists in my country, for example, actively campaign against the construction of minarets because it would be "a physical testament to a sexist ideology".

Oh, and that last bit was referring to your bitch of a home secretary, Jacqui Smith.
[/quote]

I'm no expert on Sharia law, but under that context of them honestly having Europe subvert its own people under the conditions of what the Caliphate must've been like in olden times, Wouldn't is be possible to subjugate a Non-muslim to their law? Because if the Nokturnal Mortum fans are right?, (which I'm assuming they are not) then our neighbors across the pond are fucked. Even with Muslims not trying to convert you to Islam, I have a hard time imagining they don't assume an aura of superiority given their choice of their faith. But then again that statement can be modified to anyone who lives with an ideology.

I've volunteered for Sam Harris' Reason Project to spread secular values throughout Islam. If anyone's interested I recommend the same.

Obama was reasonably funny, going back a page, for a President, but Wanda Sykes was pretty good. 'I hope his kidneys fail!' bet they'll love that... America needs more close-to-the-cuffs comedians. Get Russell Brand to do it next year.

Yay someone watched it.
I thought Obama was hilarious. "In the next 100 days... I will seriously consider losing my cool. In the next 100 days... We will design, build and dedicate a library for the first 100 days. The next 100 days will be so efficient that I will complete them within 72 days. On the 73 day I will rest." I was also impressed that I didn't shy away from joking about Bush's suckiness at the former president's expense. Reminded me of Colbert's speech.
Wanda Sykes was also funny. Rush Limbaugh is always fair game.

Yes, it's ridiculous and I hope it brings NuLab down. Watching Brown and Cameron line up to apologise was sickening, and then the goddamn Speaker got all huffy yesterday with an MP who asks whether it's worth wasting police time trying to catch the leak! Roll on this June election, it'll be very interesting to see. Who are you voting for, Brits? Certainly not Labour or El Conservatismo here, which leaves...

(edit) missed the first bit in my ranty rage! Obama gave a speech at a dinner in which he made lots of jokes, basically. Fridge linked to it a page or so back.

This video I posted a few pages back: http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2009 ... he_hi.html

It's Obama being funny at the White House Corespondent's Dinner.

Probably Green. It's interesting because everyone here is shitting themselves about the fascists getting in so much that all the radical groups are even teaming up with the Labour party. At the May Day march some Labour politician got up and said "YOU HAVE TO VOTE LABOUR WE'RE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN STOP THE BNP", and even the "One Solution Revolution" types didn't erven bother booing. I've even been getting texts and emails about the very same anti-BNP leafletting campaigns from both the SWP and this guy from the Labour Party.

But yeah, I still won't vote labour.

Unfortunately, the Greens aren't very active in my area so it's LibDem or spoilt vote for Teh Goat. I think the smaller parties are going to do quite well in this election, which unfortunately includes the UKIP tossers and the BNP, but hopefully it'll cause Labour to scuttle leftwards a bit to reclaim the protest voters. I think they need to lose an election, though, before they come back to where they should be. Do you think they'll have the balls to replace Brown? Not that Johnson, despite good things at the NHS, is much better...

Something else that annoys me is how dull Labour's website is compared to the modern, sparkly Conservative and LD websites. Labour's looks a good few years old.

Yeah hopefully when Labour lose they will switch to something completely different. It's horrible to think of them adopting the same "New Labour" crap when they are in opposition to a Tory government.

I dunno, I guess there will be some small parties to vote for. I'm sure the Greens would at least have a candidate, though, even if they aren't campaigning actively?

Well, they don't normally in my area. It's a pretty strong Labour area, lots of minorities, and the MP is Ivan Lewis, a tosspot, but he's fairly popular hereabouts and is high up enough in government to make his losing his seat unlikely. Still, perhaps the Greens'll get off their arses this time. Live in hope.

Yikes, Australia.

Anyways, what did I get through the letterbox this grey morn but a couple of leaflets, one with a scary bald man advertising UKIP and the other with a cheerful Green party candidate. :D
