Here it's easy to start working but tough to continue studying, meaning that the schools have harsher criteria for acceptance than the employers have, NOT that it's inherently harder to study than it is to work.

Not to say that construction workers don't deserve our respect and all that, but if someone was too lazy to study then they shouldn't complain about manual labour. Of course, in my ideal society, everyone would be able to educate themselves, and it would only be the people who chose not to or were too lazy who get left below.

What? I think you've spent too much time on the internet mate, too 'lazy' to study? What? Being a construction worker is probably harder and less rewarding than being a student.

I get the feeling that the comments you make are made because you look down upon people who aren't as talented at academic thngs as you.

No that's not really what I mean. I have a lot of friends who began working at 16 because they couldn't be arsed to continue studying. It's a kind of general short-sightedness that I consider lazy to some extent. The work itself is tiring, I know that. I'd hate to be a construction worker. I couldn't stand it. I don't look down on un-academic people, I just think that people who reject opportunities are making a mistake.

Well where I am people study to put off working because they're lazy.

Damn, ain't that the truth.

Personally I think society would be better off if people went to university later in their lives. People (myself at that age included) often just see uni as an excuse to doss about for three more years after leaving school. But actually, education is a real privilege and a great thing to have... I don't think that's appreciated until someone has experienced the "real world".

I've noticed the older people at Uni try harder...

Sadly, I have to witness that sort of thing everytime I'm on campus. In fact, I once saw somebody get interviewed by the police for disruptive behavior in the Library. You would think that, by college age, people would be taking their education more seriously (after all, isn't High School supposed to be the "big transition period" for most?). But I guess many of them don't. It's embarassing, really.

When you have an attitude like that and a society propagates that attitude, of course, you can't see it being possible.

Holy crap, it took a while to read all the posts, and I just wanted to put in my 2 cents. TBH, I thought DM had the Soviet flag as an avatar because it looks cool.

After reading that whole debate thing, even though we don't agree on some things musically, I wholeheartedly agree with Frigid's thoughts on religion and I have to say: much respect.

As for one more opinion on the religion thing (though I don't want to drag it out), I think that people believe and have faith because even more than all the aspects of the universe that we cannot explain, it is because when people die, they find it unacceptable that when they die, there is no afterlife and no continuation of their consciousness.

Not to stir up debate, either. But two things:

a) Not everybody who believes in God or even follows a particular religion necessarily believes in an afterlife. With some religions, such as Christianity, such a belief is manditory. But there are others (including many Jewish denominations) that don't require it.

b) One could just as easily make the argument that many atheists are atheists because they're hoping that science will eventually allow us to overcome death (I think Descartes once suggested that this might be the ultimate reason why a lot of scientists are atheists - when you dig beyond the "logical barriers", politics, etc.). Everybody fears death, regardless of religious belief.

Just sayin'.

that's not the soviet flag, it's the hammer & sickle.

The soviet flag is a solid red flag with a hammer & sickle symbol in the upper left corner, and there's a yellow star above it.

Won't argue with you there dude, I'll be the first to admit I'm not looking forward to dying, and also the first to drink a proverbial elixir of life, in whatever form it is.

Hrm? The hammer and sickle is a symbol that stands for communism. it's been used in dozens of flags, not just the soviet one. what's anal about correcting a misconception with two sentences?

hell, the USSR wasn't really a communist state post 1925 anyway.

china is a totalitarian state with a market economy and a nominal 'communist' party in charge; it's about as communist as Christmas Island or Germany.

China's the perfect capitalist state. It's government allows its capital be moved and invested internationally while the workers are kept in authoritarian check.n
