It's the psychologically and morally ingrained tradition of the Auftragtaktik in the Prussian and later German army. Soldiers were given very limited, very clear orders which left them no leeway at all.

But a much used excuse was that of "they'd have killed me if I hadn't done it". I don't know if this is what you're saying exactly, but interestingly no case has ever been found of a soldier being killed for refusing orders. I don't know whether this is because no one refused or if no one was ever killed for refusing.

If you want the full works on the Prussian military mindset and how it was carried over to the Wehrmacht, I greatly suggest you read this book.

It's because the Germans were ingrained with Kant's emphasis on duty.

It's not like German soldiers are the only ones ever to commit atrocities. Soldiers in general are trained to follow orders mindlessly, etc.

Forgive me for being an asshole about this, but the entire German population did not kill Jews and enjoy it. You're just saying things without thinking about them, which is what I do exclusively - EXCLUSIVELY, goddamn - when drunk-posting. Everyone else, including myself when sober, has to think before posting.

I recently read a study on the psychology of following orders, specifically German soldiers who had to directly execute people, and the results were surprising... Most people actually didn't really have any qualms about killing.

I wouldn't be surprised. Even the Japs loved their orders to kill. That video on youtube about 'The Rape of Nanking' was just sick. And even the former soldiers interviewed showed no regret at all.

Hey Goat, don't be so anal, I don't mean literally every person in Germany killed the Jews. Hitler instilled a sense of superiority in the Germans and that inferior races had to be purged. The idea of a race you belong to is an attractive one for many people, and so joining the army to clear the way for the master race seemed very patriotic or even moral thing to do for the Fatherland.

The thing is Hitler found many willing SS soldiers to carry out his orders in conquered countries, and on the front lines, such orders didn't need to be followed to the letter as if the soldiers didn't want to commit the massacres of, for example, the Jews on the Eastern Front, then they didn't have to and Hitler would have been convinced with a fabricated report.
