Even if by some weird chance that Machine Head were Thrash, there's no way in burn My Eyes should be in the top 20. It's a rather bland album that starts sounding the same after awhile.

Of course, it ends with MoP and RiB on the top slots. Yawn. Further proof that those 2 albums are the most overrated albums in history. They aren't even the best efforts from eitheir band.

1. In which drawer would you put Machine Head? Nu Metal? Metalcore? I mean, e.g. The Blackening is VERY thrashy.

2. Why not? IMO Metallica were never better than on MOP (only Ride the Lightning and KEA comes close) and Slayer never better than on RIB. Even not on Hell Awaits or Seasons in the Abyss.

Well, at least they didn't put Countdown To Extinction on this list...

Is "Groove" a separate metal genre? That's new to me...

"Groove" when applied to metal is kind of a perjorative term used to refer to bands such as later Pantera or Machine Head, that may incorporate some elements of styles such as thrash but tend to have a slower and more straightforward shoutalong delivery that is more accessible to mainstream types.

Some people would associate it with musical stupidity because it appeals to the lowest common denominator of "jumpdafuckup"-ism. It also seems to clearly precede some of metal's more hated manifestations such as nu.

This isn't really fair though because plenty of great metal bands groove like hell. It's much more useful as a verb, or "groovy" as an adjective, than as an actual genre label.

No Sodom?! What is the deal here!

Also Seven Churches should be much higher. Besides from this the list is actually not that bad. I'm glad to see Artillery and Voïvod there. Maybe some newcomers will pay attention to these under-appreciated bands.

Post thrash would be an acceptable answer but not fucking neo. We're not going to have a genre debate.

Nah, post-thrash implies a genre boundary breakdown or progressive direction -> Meshuggah, say, compare post-rock or post-black to the originals. Neo-Thrash is new thrash, thrash as reimagined by people with groovy guitars and jumpdafuckupisms (best word ever?).

I think we have an international conflict  , because what in english is called "groove metal" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groove_metal is in germany only known as "neo thrash", but the bands are the same: Machine Head, Soulfly and so on.

That's actually not true, because even one of the truest thrash bands, had 4 different thrash styles on their first 4 albums.

And if you don't know which band i mean, just compare Show No Mercy with Hell Awaits and this with Reign in Blood and this with South of Heaven...(and even they went away on Diabolus in Musica and God Hates us All to a nearly nu/neo thrash like sound).

What especially funny is, that you could call Thrash Metal actually "Metalcore" because it was always a mix of hardcore punk and metal. :P

Slayer never changed that much. Sped up, slowed down, whoa, big deal.

Though this list isn't nearly as bad as I envisioned, the lack of any Sodom on an all-time thrash list is an unforgivable sin.

Show No Mercy - NWOBHM influenced Thrash like Metallica
Hell Awaits - long Songs, more Death Metal like riffs
RIB - Short, nearly Hardcore like songs, very different to Bay Area Thrash
South of Heaven - Groovy Thrash
