Judas Kiss and Unforgiven III aren't that bad.

I hate how the bass is non-existent.

After many spins I'm starting to really like Unforgiven III not so much though for "The Judas Kiss".

Also, I like the instrumental, great riffs, leads and solo.
Zad, Why should an instrumental never be the longest track ??
Many bands have done way longer instrumentals than this, such as Symphony X on the Oddessy, for me length has no repercusions as long as the result is good. I'd also like to point out that an instrumental IS a song without lyrics or singing, so why are you having such a beef with it ?

Overall I'd give it 78% but what does 5% really change ? Other than that, nice review Zad!

Sorry but this is a great album!

I have to give credit were credit is due. And honestly I didn't think they could do it anymore. But now here it is, another killer Metallica album delivered 20 years later!!! I am pleasantly shocked!

I hated the Loads & St. Anger, and this is exactly what we all have been asking of Metallica to do for the past almost 20 years. Just go back to playing the aggressive thrash! Well they do it, and do a damn fine job of it, and everyone still bitches? I am not saying it's as good as the first 4 classics, but pretty darn close which is pretty impresive now that these guys are pushing 50!

So yeah I gave Metallica a ton of greif too for there last 3 albums cause they deserved it. Now I will happily give them there props. May even be my album of the year! :dio:

I heard it. Some cool parts, but unfortunately you have to wade through crappy riffs and stupid lyrics to get to the cool parts. Yeah, its thrashy, but its that kind of new boring thrash. I've watched interviews, and now that metal is popular again, I see Metallica putting forth a concerted effort to seem more "metal". James wearing his Venom t-shirt. Lars talking about the pressure of people expecting Metallica to save metal. blah blah blah. These guys are tired old wankers and this album is an attempt to fool people into thinking that Metallica give a shit about writing good music. It is uninspired and boring. The fake "let's try to be metal" attitude is incredibly transparent. My final conclusion, some cool solos (I will concede that), but there's too much crap surrounding the cool solos for this to be worth half a flying fuck.

Good job there Z-dawg. Pretty accurate review. I do like all of the songs on the album, which is why my vote would be much higher.

yea it is modern thrash sound mixed with old school riffs. Its like any other modern thrash album releaed by older band, newer bands, or wanna be thrash bands like Trivium, but its not dull or boring. There are tons of powerful riffs. Name a boring song? it can't be a ballad. thats too obvious, though i do enjoy the two that are on this album. Tired old wankers? well so are the rolling stones, black sabbath (heaven & hell), van halen, ac/dc, motorhead, judas priest, ozzy, queen, blue cheer, the cult, aerosmith, journey, def leppard, iron maiden, motley crue, alice cooper, scorpions, rush, deep purple, guns n ' roses (axel rose), sabastian bach, ect...... .
I don't hear anyone tell these bands to stop touring or to not make any more albums.

Actually, the guys sounds tired and out of shape. There is a lot of boring stuff here, but there is some good parts too. The opener is a great song. I don't agree on the solos though, its too fucking sloppy and uncreative.

Ähm, you are in the false thread. This is not Load (or Reload).

DM 73
Load 79

???

B u l l s h i t

Kill Em All 96
Ride The Lightning 97
Master of Puppets 98
And Justice For All 91
Black Album 88

St. Anger 78
Death Magnetic 90

That would be my score (at this moment).

75/100 for me it's their best in a long time, but no album of the year.

I ordered this a week ago and I'm still waiting for it to arrive. Most importantly, I can't wait to hear it; which is an amazing admission considering I thought that St Anger was a poor piece of work and the Load twins were underwhelming!

Metallica haven't really done anything significant since the Black album because they simply elevated themselves into the mainstream with that album. Yes, they sold their souls for a load of dollar, but I don't blame them for that. It's a shame they couldn't remain loyal to their first 3 albums, but why shouldn't they cash in a bit? They have made their mark, they have their legacy.

However, one thing that Metallica have managed to hold onto despite their last 3 (4 if you count Garage Inc) lackluster efforts is their fanbase. It's a strange phenomena, but bands like 'Maiden, AC/DC, etc, have also managed that same feat. I reckon it's because they come from a time when Metal was simply exciting and fresh, without thousands of bands diluting the scene.

Yes, I know this sounds like a 'we had it better in the 80s & 90s' type of rant, but it's the way I see it. There is a severe lack of originality in modern day metal, unless you go obscure and champion the likes of Finntroll/Blind Guardian/Darkthrone as the next big thing. From a previous rant in the Soulfly 'Conquer' review, I think some of you know my opinion on those types of bands, but the point I'm making is Metal needs a Metallica, especially one making decent music, because they are a reminder of the past when Metal stood for something much different.

Phew!! I suppose, it's time to go into my usual month of hiding! Just before I do, I'll have a 'Viva Le Revolution' moment! Buy Death Magnetic on CD, dig out your CD Walkman and listen to it all the way through. After you start to tire of it, next dig out your Master of Puppets CD and remember (or imagine!) what it was like to discover amazing music, especially without the luxuries which we have today like the easy access of downloading and skipping a dodgy sounding song on your iPod!!!

Different reviewers..

And DM 90/100? don't be silly, do you call this a masterpiece? Open your eyes.

metal_xxx - it's his opinion man. Just because you don't agree doesn't mean you need to ridicule him or others. Try not to be a douche.

I give it an 88. It's solid except for Unforgiven III. If anyone was expecting Master of Puppets part 2, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. But if you are just hoping for Metallica to put out a good album once again, you'll be happy, in my opinion.

I enjoyed the review, Zad, even if I think it should have scored higher.

He made a stupid comment about my opinion.

Anyway, I never meant to make a fool out of him. But I just don't see how this is such a godly album. But okay, I'll wait till all the hype is gone.

Well, perhaps that's because The Rolling Stones, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Rush are still making highly interesting albums that are well worth listening to. You can't really compare them to the 'tallica.

Overall, people seem to be rating this +/- about 10 to what I gave it, which is fair enough. It's not a 50 or a 90, we can agree that much!

I would have given it a score in the 40's. If you compare it to st-anger sure, it would be in the 70's or 80's but what wouldn't.

A generally average album with a few good songs and a few shitty ones (the ones I enjoyed most are This Was Just Your Life, The Day That Never Comes and The Judas Kiss). James' vocals are awful. Hammett is good again. And its far too bloody long. Thats as much as needs to be said.

50/100.
