I know choosing a new president is very important, but the whole circus around it is just a little to much.

I actually disagree with this, I think more countries should try and spice their elections up a little. For damn sure we English have gotten very cynical with our identikit, dull political parties - a bit of passion would at least give the illusion that something important will happen.

I see what your saying, but I can empathize with his comment as well. The fanatical right and left are the majority, and they believe every piece of bullshit they are spoonfed, be it through email forwards or the media. Actual fence sitters, like me, are becoming lesser by the day. My mom has a friend that still believes Obama is a radical Muslim! Seriously, it's pretty sad.

At this point, I'm leaning McCain, but that's only because I'm familiar with him and what he stands for as I wanted him to get the nod in 2000 instead of Dubya. As the debates unfold, I may switch sides. Obama is a gifted speaker, and has managed to rally a lot of support without really saying anything of great substance. I'll be interested to hear his responses when he's pressed on issues in debate format. Either way, I'll probably be happy with the outcome of the election, as both candidates are big on reducing government spending, focusing on turning our economy around, and crashing the party big oil has been having for the last 8 years.

Oh, and the media coverage of Sarah Palin has been absolutely shameful. I would have no problems with her as VP. People that are bitching about abortion and abstinence and shit like that need to realize that it really doesn't matter what she or anyone thinks, Roe v. Wade is not getting overturned. Abortion is a pretty pointless issue to make your most important when choosing a candidate, in my opinion.

I disagree that McCain offers anything new: he's a dreadful speaker, steals his opponent's messages and is willing to exploit pretty much anything to get ahead, from his time as a prisoner to Palin. If anything wins the election for him, it'll be Palin; she's above criticism now, and I can't see anything that could take her down. I think they'll win at the moment, actually.

What is ridiculous is that it's a tiny sector of the online left that's been attacking her family - hardly the whole of leftwingdom, and hugely hypocritical of everyone to get worked up over this whilst Hilary was facing a shitstorm of sexism just months ago. The Democrats really need to go on the attack if they want to win - being kept on the defensive by the Republicans isn't good, and all this Palin fuss is just advertising for the reds. Come on, I want blood! I want to see Biden laying into Palin in the debates about all the corruption charges, I want Obama to ask McCain why being tortured means that you'll be better at running a country, I want the Dems to stop playing nice. Then they'll have a chance.

Well, I don't know what else to tell you. McCain has a history of pissing off his own party, so I don't see how you can't see that he wouldn't offer anything new. His main issue is and always has been eliminating pork barrel spending and pissing on the big oil parade Dubya has been allowing the last 8 years. Stealing his opponents messages? So, if one candidate says they're promoting change, the other can't? What are they supposed to do then?

What's really ridiculous is that you actually believe that the only people dragging her through the mud were online bloggers. Some of the people were on Obama's campaign, hence him publicly declaring (wisely) that the next person in his camp who brings up her family is getting fired. Hell, even right wing fanatical dipshit Dr. Laura was slinging shit all over Sarah Palin, as was much of the mainstream media. You need to get more informed, you're starting to remind of my neighbor that believes every bit of pro-left or anti-right information he hears or reads.

EDIT: I do like Obama, and I still may vote for him, but you lefters and the BS you proclaim as fact make it really hard to root for him sometimes.

Did McCain not vote with Bush 90% of the time after all, then? I've been lied to! And come on, Obama was all about change. When you think of change, you think Obama, that's how strong a buzzword it was. McCain used to be about experience, but now Palin's aboard they can't use that any more.

And again, it's sheer hypocrisy. Bill O'Reilly was definately in support of Palin, yet he was all over the Spears. Ultimately, any person running for an office as big as the American Presidency is going to get a lot of criticism for the smallest things - if Clinton got it, then Palin will get it, and that's that.

Well, he is still a Republican at the end of the day. Those voting stats don't tell me anything. Perhaps if you could show me what he was voting for or against, I would care more. All I can tell you is that things will be vastly different regardless of who's elected. Dubya has this country so fucked that the next President has to change things or you can consider his ass ousted in 2012. McCain has a history of attacking government overspending, which Bush apparently seems fine with. McCain is no friend to the oil lobbyists. Bush? I don't even need to say anything. Change is coming regardless, so I really don't care who "thought" of it first.

Well, you will never catch me defending that piece of shit O'Reilly. Of course your last sentence is absolutely true, but that doesn't make it any less ridiculous. The fact that her husband getting a DUI 20+ years ago or her 17 year old daughter being pregnant is even news is just stupid. Who really cares? A friend of mine, who is a big Obama supporter, said to me "See, Palin's all about abstinence, but she can't even get her own daughter to practice it!" I wanted to kick him in the balls. Seriously, is this what political discourse has been reduced to?

I agree with your latter point - we shouldn't even be bringing religious views into politics, the fact that politicians (here as well) have to pander to people by professing their faith is indeed ridiculous.

Yeah, and the really sad thing is that the US political climate requires you to state your religious beliefs immediately. That's how the neocons started all the "Obama is a radical Muslim" crap. He didn't come right out and state his faith. As much as I love talking politics, its become quite ridiculous.

I recommend the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC to any liberals. It just started this week. She is an incredibly intelligent pundit. The first night of the show, she held her ground to Pat Buchanan about Palin's religiosity which was awesome. She makes claims similar to Stewart's without the humor but with more facts.

Apparently, there is some secret operation going on in Iraq, which is being compared to the Manhattan project, which is wiping out terrorists and is supposedly the main contributing factor of the decline in violence since the surge.

Blaming the media is such a copout. Even though the right has their own network, overall the media coverage I've seen has been mostly pro-liberal.
