a lot of bands exist to connect with the crowd during live performances and their music reflects that. "pumping the crowd" is something that the "actual music" does; they're not two different things. if it's the band's goal, then a good song will get the crowd into it. and just because a chorus is written to be sung along too doesn't mean that it's easy to write.

yeah the verse is pretty weak. the intro is cool though, and the part after the second chorus

I'm mainly talking about bands like Mendeed and Slowmotion Apocalypse who write songs consisting of different "crowd pumping" riffs attached together with no real coherency. No dynamics, no thought out song structure.

Slowmotion Apocalypse >>>> Mendeed

Their cover of Be Quick Or Be Dead is wicked.
But the structure business is something I've noticed with most metalcore bands, and I've noticed it with our other guitar player, who listens to almost nothing besides metalcore. When he writes a song, he'll write a bunch of different riffs and then proceed to copy and paste them.

If it's all acoustic, are tracks 6 and 11 extra-acoustic, with an acoustic topping?

I should dig out whichever album of theirs I have. Heathenreel, I think.

Even if the music does suck, it's still really incredible album art. :dio:

Tracks 6 and 11 are old songs, being redone acoustically, the other songs are all new.

A couple of new Misery Index songs are floating around. I think the drumming is stale compared to the awesomeness of Kevin Talley in Discordia.

And the new bloodbath has leaked but I haven't heard it yet. I'm not even excited because I know it'll kick the ass of this planet.

If I hadn't heard The Scythe I would be stoked for this. I will give them another chance though, they did release 2 amazing albums and 1 good, Im willing to forgive and forget The Scythe if the band is as well. I do like the idea of an acoustic album since I enjoyed all of their acoustics on the first 3 albums quite abit. Plus a new version of Skywards could be cool.

You should, that album is a masterpiece. But a lot of people I know have trouble with the vocals..

Agreed! In my opinion, that album almost reaches perfection when it comes to the combination of power metal and folk.

Just got an email from Aurora Borealis:

Quote:
L'ACEPHALE follow up 'Mord and Totschlag' with 'Malefeasance' later this year, a CD and 2LP featuring incredible black metal and mind blowing noise/industrial/ritual musics. This truly stunning release should see the light of day in October.

:D Considering the controversy when I gave Mord und Totschlag 91/100 (we got hate mail for not similary praising some melodeath album) this should be interesting.

Being honest, I can ony remember knowing of two: that one and another attacking someone for another review. We've been lucky, I suppose.

Haha!! I actually saved that one, here's the email that got sent to the site contact address:

Quote:
Hi!! first, thank you for the great site. your reviews have helped
me to find all new awesome bands like scar symmetry etc. just
wondered what is it with you and metalcore? unearth and blinded
colony for example, which isn´t even metalcore at all and yet you
categorised it so. its melodic death. b.c. got 69/100 even that the
newest delivering is an incredible album. and then bands like
l´acephale get rated 91/100 and their "music" is beyond shitty. yes,
I know that everything is relative and its all up to personal
interests, but still...

I couldn't help but respond, with this:

Quote:
You might have an argument with Blinded Colony being melodic death instead of metalcore, might. But come on, Unearth is metalcore, I don't even see how that's up for debate. Yes, they are more melodic than most metalcore, but the breakdowns and vocals easily garner them the metalcore tag. As for L'Acephale, I don't know what to tell you. Just because you say its shitty doesn't make it so. Do you dislike black metal? It's all personal preference, not really worth getting pissy over. Most of the staff don't like metalcore because...well...most of it sucks. Maybe you feel the same way about other genres, which is your right.

To which he responded, with this:

Quote:
hello again! just to make it right, I did mean that unearth IS metalcore and b.c. is not. just continued the frase a bit funny and wondered the metalcore issue generally. the main point I´m tryin´ to make is that for example mercenarys newest got 92/100, which is quite understandable considering that pretty much everything from songstructures to production is done with great overall meaning in mind. and this is what gets me pissed. a group of "musicians" put a recorder to the middle of their reherseal room and push rec. result is 25 minutes of cacophonic noise, screams and growls with no idea of nothing at all. I mean, wheres the production, idea, some sort of thin red line to follow??? as even a joke no man can say that, "yes we do this with straight face." maybe if you´re 10 years old. and no, I don´t dislike black metal, generally... I have every record that dimmu have done and bands like behemoth, martriden and anaal nakhrath have some very good songs. (demigod, slaves...)(enigma of fate)(lama sabachtani) but I can´t say that I´m a blackmetal fan. anyway, why do I like them is that theres SOMETHING to grab onto, something you recognise as an attempt to be music. noise is not music, its noise.

After that, I just gave up. :D
